When Crota "broke" Eris Morn's fireteam there were apparently said to have been no survivors apart from Eris. The others fought the Hive until their light was consumed. However, Toland did not. He went willingly into the dark, desiring to finally sate his curiosity. While the others were obliterated, he remained intact. His willingness surprised the Hive and so they allowed him to remain and learn some of their secrets. He spoke to Ir Yût and told her that he was a friend. In return she defined the quiddity of death.
Although Toland had made peace with the Hive, he was not loyal to them. He felt the shuddering reverberation of Crota's death throughout the Hive Netherworlds. He knew that Oryx would come to avenge his son. Toland kept a journal throughout his time outside of the Universe. The journal contained all of what he knew about the Hive. Their secrets, their rituals and their weaknesses.
Toland secretly allowed the journal to pass back into the waking world, to allow some chance of withstanding Oryx's rage. It arrived safely and was instrumental in a Guardian's struggle against the Taken. However, Toland did not do this for the Speaker as he views him as an ignorant hypocrite. It is likely that he did it for the Guardians who still fight for the Tower. Perhaps to aid there struggle or perhaps in pity of it. Regardless of the reason, Oryx would have been unreachable without the advice of Toland.
So where is Toland? Where could he be? Is he still alive?

When Roland was killed by a death singer he met, his body was broken but his soul lives on in the ascendent realm where the hive can only truly die, he can no longer exist physically, but only mentally

His shoes fallen off

Toland is looking for a box of raisins....
-
Maybe he made his own "throne world" like orxy and Crota did so he could his research in private and away from prying eyes

Toland is still floating around in the Hive netherworld. I believe he may take Oryx's place as king of the Hive. Not 100% sure, but I've seen evidence to suggest that.

Ir Yut sung him to death.

Im pretty sure he's in the Hive's Ascendant Realm, where the skies are burning with green fire. I forget which card talks about it, but he's still alive.

During his time with the hive he became convinced of Oryx's "Sword logic". In most of his grimoire, he talks to us as lesser beings. I think he's simply watching out of morbid curiosity. His journal can be looked at as a guide. He's basically saying "Here comes your opponent, these are the rules of the game he plays. Good luck!" That's why he's tweaked when we just go on about our business after we kill Oryx. The sword logic dictates that there has to be a "strongest", and we are abdicating the throne. The only real exception to this is where he advises us to use Oryx's tithing system against him. I believe it's the Court of Oryx's grimoire.

Edited by GutterRock: 8/6/2016 3:40:03 PMI bet Toland is hiding amongst the Hive who are on the moon. Probably because you don't see Taken poking around the moon too often. Plus where else? (By the way does anyone know if there are Grimoire cards or something that has excerpts from Toland's journal? I'm interested in what's in his journal)

Some seem to think that Toland is drifting between the Hive Ascendant Realms, his disembodied spirit somehow able to communicate between our world and the Hive netherworld.

Toland is a disembodied force floating around the ascended realm of the Hive. Perhaps he now has his own throne-world. He survived death like an ascended Hive. It's also likely he's the strange light that leads players around in the TTK missions - that would explain the 'fingertips on the surface of my mind" Eris complained about when we saw the light blob on Phobos. He didn't want Eris to detect his presence so he was messing with her.
