Two years is not that long of a time. I can still play Halo -blam!-ing 3 multiplayer on the 360 if I want to. Whenever online play is cut, it's often out of the developers' hands. It would be one thing if it were Microsoft/Sony ending online play, but it's not.
It's not even Bungie saying "we can't host this anymore" as they would be if they brought servers down. It's an arbitrary restriction.
