Right now throwing knives are too weak. Bungie needs to buff the base damage by 10% here are some reasons why.
- Skip grenades do more damage and you don't have to aim them
- Sticky grenades have insane aim assistance and are a one hit kill
- Scatter grenades do more damage and have a AOE
- Storm grenades do more damage and are an AOE grenade
And all of the examples have a faster cool down than a throwing knife. Also they all start with S I thought that was interesting.
Edit: it somehow slipped my mind that all the examples were grenades so here are some mêlée examples
- Storm caller mêlée ( forgot the name ) has the range were a throwing knife is most affective and you don't have to aim it because it just snaps to people
- Flame shield and energy drain both have good range and it gives you health back
- Smoke grenades have good damage and an AOE that damages you when you are out of it
- Blink strike can one hit you if they have on backstab
Throwing knives only use was for quick damage in a short time frame that is how it was meant to be used it wasn't OP because you had to aim and put thought into the knife because it had travel time and it dropped. The damage right now is not worth the effort because it is way more effective to just use your primary. Regarding the one shot knife to do that you had to set up a build for it and still aim it. I can get the Nerf though but I can't get why the nerfed the base damage. They could have only nerfed khepris sting and the burning knife. The 10% base damage Nerf was unneeded and ruined the knife and how it was meant to be used.

A throwing knife to the dome should be a ohk period, end of story. If strikers can have a ohk shoulder charge then gunslingers should have the throwing knife be a ohk for head shots only. NO I AM NOT SAYING shoulder charge should be nerfed, just saying a throwing knife to the dome should be a ohk.

Grenades have nothing to do with melee. But I feel your pain. Knives were the most stylish way to dome the enemy. But now they have become as unreliable as fusion rifles (pardon the comparison). Of course the debuff was only 10%. But that 10% meant life or death. Now I have to land multiple shots in the guy that definitely going to shoulder charge or slide+shotgun me. How many times were you killed by a knife in your matches on average? How many times have you had to wait for your knife to recharge because you missed the throw? The knife curves and has travel time. In that window anything can happen. So this nerf was uncalled for. Knives were a way of downing enemies at a distance. It truly took skill to land headshots. After 3 years of trying to be the best at this subclass, I feel so cheated. So damn cheated.

Your comparing a melee to a grenade, while I agree they are in-need of a buff the damage of a grenade should be greater

First, you can not compare a melee ability to a grenade unless it's tied to the grenade (and we're not talking about Voidwalkers). Second, they were nerfed because with "Khepri's Sting" exotic, landing a *Body Shot with a throwing knife and incendiary blade would deal 191 damage, and could kill anyone (except for supers; except for Golden Gun, ironically) on a headshot. They NEEDED this nerf. If you wanna get 1 shot headshots, run Khepri's, but it's your funeral.

Head shot should kill other than that the damage is fine.

Throwing knives give you melee from a distance. They are one of a kind in the melee slot.
