Pokemon's location and distance is shown through 0-3 foot steps within the app. Through using 3 separate phones and using the same Pokemon as central distance marker, we all stood on top of the same Pokemon, one of us stayed on top of the Pokemon while I started walking left and my other assistant started walking right and marked the distance where the first foot print showed on the app to 2 foot prints then lastly 3 foot prints. We did this 5 times on 5 different Pokemons and the collected data are.
0 foot print = 0.00 meters to 39.99 meters
1 foot print = 40 meters to 59.99 meters
2 foot print = 60 meters to 89.99 meters
3 foot print = any distance above 90 meters
Edit: Since I did the measuring from the source to the change in indication, 0 meters to 39.99 meters represents 0 fp, 40 meters to 59.99 meters represents 1 fp, 60 meters to 89.99 meters represents 2 fp, and any distance above 90 meters will all be 3 fp
It's weird how it goes from 40, then another 20, then last 30 in the distance between each foot print. But from all five trials and going opposite directions the number came up averaging the same results give or take 1 or 2 meters.
Edit 7.17.2016: Ever since yesterday's server meltdown, every Pokemon is showing 3 fp, it's annoying, my team missed a Charmeleon because I didn't know if I was going towards or away from it
