WHITE IS RIGHT BLACK IS BAD
White is the best color to use when painting a room, as the white plays off to shadows giving the perception of more depth making the room look more spacious.
Black is bad as shadows aren't as prominent, making the room look smaller than it really is.

I like to combine them. White paint, everything else is black. Black shelves, black desk, black bed.
