  • I nodded. "That's all I ask."

  • "I'll give you a decision in the morning." The marine turned and headed towards the imperium's makeshift HQ.

  • As he walked away, I debated whether or not to call after him to give him back his gear, but finally decided against it. If he had wanted it back, he would have asked, and he obviously had access to much better gear. My mind made up, I turned to find something to eat and a place to sleep. He said the tavern was the best place to go for that, so I headed there first.

  • There were a few taverns to choose from, all catering to different groups, some were solely for the imperium, others for xenos, a few didn't care who you were.

  • I headed towards one of the humans-only taverns. Unlike, well, nearly every other human in this universe, I didn't have a problem with xenos, but it would take some getting used to before I was willing to sleep in the same place as alien life forms.

  • The tavern was decent, clean rooms, warm, and the beer was cheap. There were a few people inside minding their business. The bartender was an older man, he cleaned the glass he was holding and looked up. "You new here?"

  • I sat down with a sigh, leaning my lasrifle against the bar. "Yep. Fresh outta the shit."

  • The bar tender laughed. "Welcome to the green tankard, what will you have? I know you probably don't have money but a tab is alright, not like I'm going to live to collect and the food will go bad if I don't sell it."

  • "Water," I said immediately. "Then, you can tell me what ya got to eat. Running for your life from a daemon and fighting Chaos cultists tends to take a good bit out of ya."

  • The man poured a glass of water, and handed it over. "Food is nothing fancy, got most things though."

  • Before I responded, I grabbed the water and drank deeply for a few seconds. When I set it back on the bar, almost half of the water was gone. "Thanks," I said, taking a few breaths. Once I had gotten my breath back, I looked at the bartender. "Something solid to fill my stomach. Meat, preferably."

  • The bar tender nodded and went into the back, he returned with shepherds pie and a side of some sort of stew. "Here you are."

  • Well, I wasn't very much a fan of shepherds pie or soul myself, but it was a damn sight better than what I had been expecting. With a brief "Thanks," I dug in to the meal with gusto, as I was veritably starving from the day's trials.

  • "What's your story?" The bar tender asked.

  • I looked up from my meal, before siting back as I swallowed what was currently in my mouth. After taking a drink of water, I responded. "From what I heard, the same as anyone else here: suddenly found myself in the middle of bumfück nowhere, until someone found me." I snorted. "Of course, I found a Chaos daemon summoning first, so I was more than a little panicked when Blackburn found me."

  • The man's attitude changed. "Word of advice friend, that man isn't very popular, you'd do well to not mention him. He's rumored to be sympathetic to chaos."

  • Shit, hadn't meant to let that slip. "I'll keep that in mind," I said, lower than before. "But I highly doubt that he worships Chaos. For one, he works with the Imperium, and for another, he helps people like me. To most any sort of Chaos mindset, I'm just some useless civvy. Not much damage I can do." I shook my head. "And yet, not only did he help me, but he gave me this gear - which got a bit more use today fighting the very peo- things, that those rumors say he associates with." With a shrug, I sat back. "He may be a merc, but he's a sight more decent than what he could be. If he truly worshiped Chaos, why not just offer his services to them?"

  • "Because he's smart. And because we think it might be tzeentch, associates with xenos, eldar lover he is."

  • I gave him a look. "And xenos automatically equate Chaos? Believe it or not, most of the other races in this wide blood-soaked galaxy are in the same boat as us, just trying to survive. To a lot of them, Chaos is just another thing out to kill them, same as with us." I shrugged. "Course, the hell do I know? I'm just some stranger, pulled from his life before to try and survive in this hell hole."

  • "I'll give you the benefit of the doubt friend, you're new here, you've still got a lot to learn. Xenos want us humans dead just as much as chaos does. "

  • I shrugged again. "And we want them dead all the same. I'm not saying they're not a threat, just that they're a wholly separate one from Chaos." I paused. "Most of the time, anyway."

  • "Fair enough." With that, I tucked back into my dinner. Seemed I was going to have to keep my thoughts to myself for a while. Hopefully I wouldn't have too much trouble with that. Hopefully.

  • Eventually, I sat back, my plate and bowl clean. "Thanks for the food. Mind if I crash here for the night?"
