High rate of fire Pulse Rifles. Long Post
These pulse rifles are your best choice for a weapon that is great in medium ranges but can also cover nearly any range. Their constant damage helps flinch opponents at range and their above average TTK makes them competitive at close range.
There are two archetypes of high fire rate pulse rifles. The first tier, the fastest firing, includes only the Grasp of Malok, which is only obtainable from killing Omnigul in the Will of Crota strike.
- These have a total fire rate of 540rpm or 180Bursts per Minute (bpm) (with delay between bursts included)
- A burst fire rate of 900rpm, (fire rate of the actual burst, it is the same for all pulse rifles)
- A burst delay of 0.2s
- Deal about 16 damage to the body and 23 to the head
- It takes 13 body shots to kill or 9 headshots (at least 7 headshots needed plus 2 body)
- This means it will take 5 bursts to kill with only body shots or 3 bursts with headshots.
- Maximum TTK (if you get all body shots) is 1.34s and Minimum TTK (if you get enough headshots) is 0.8s.
These pulse rifles have such a small burst delay that they feel like they are full auto as well as a very quick headshot TTK, although its not as quick as the highest impact type of pulse rifle it is much more consistent and less difficult for an average player to attain. Their body shot time to kill is quite average but with only a few headshots you can reduce this kill time considerably. The fast fire rate and quick TTK makes them great for close to medium range while the burst fire and decent range makes them capable even at longer ranges. I found that at medium to long range the low accuracy made landing shots a little more difficult and headshots much more difficult, this might be due to the roll I got on my grasp, which lacked counter balance. This archetype is great for average players; since it can kill quickly only needing to land a few headshots, shoots quickly and has little recoil. But also is great for skilled players because of its super fast kill time if you can hit headshots consistently.
When using this weapon it is wise to use a sniper in your special slot to cover the long ranges.
Look to maximize stability on the weapon as well as look for perks that quicken your reload or extend your mag size.
The second tier, which shoots slightly slower, includes the Hawksaw, SUROS PDX-45, and The Aegis of The Reef.
- These have a total fire rate of 450rpm or 150bpm(with delay between bursts included)
- A burst fire rate of 900rpm
- A burst delay of 0.267s
- Deal about 17 damage to the body and 25 to the head
- It takes 12 body shots to kill or 8 headshots (at least 7 headshots needed plus 1 body)
- This means it will take 4 bursts to kill with only body shots or 3 bursts with headshots
- Maximum TTK (if you get all body shots) is 1.34s and Minimum TTK (if you get enough headshots) is 0.867s.
This archetype is one of the most optimal tools for covering all your ranges. With an average body shot TTK, an above average headshot TTK, and a manageably fast fire rate, the weapon is an awesome and comfortable experience. Although it does not have the kill time of the faster firing tier it makes up for it with its greater accuracy and consistency, which allows it to be practically the best choice for medium range and even exceptionally decent for long ranges. It can handle its self at close range but only really against other primaries especially if you can hit headshots.
When running one of these a close range special is very useful. Also again look to maximize the stability, other than that is up to personal preference since they already reload quickly and don’t have range issues.
Overall the high rate of fire type of pulse rifle is an exceptional type of weapon to use and both of its archetypes are some of the best weapons in the crucible. Personally I’d say that the higher fire rate tier is the strongest although it’s hard to say because of the incredible versatility of the other tier.
Which high rate of fire pulse is your favorite? What perks do you run on yours?

like grasp very much as with counter balance / perfect balance, it can compete with mida at scout rifle range. used to like red death but it seems to be strictly a PvE weapon.
-
I adore my Aegis of the Reef pulse rifle, It has two stability perks and full auto perk ^_^
The first tier, the fastest firing, includes only the Grasp of Malok,
Eh, Praedyth's Timepiece and Oversoul Edict are also in this archetype as well as several rares (which can exceed 310 attack). Protip: be mindful of absolutes (ie. The word "only")....

Is it me or does Secret Round actually slow down the rate of fire. I didn't notice it on the hawksaw archetype but it rolled on one of my Maloks and felt like a mid RoF Pulse. Immediately used as infusion fuel. Doesn't Praedyth's Timepiece have secret round??? It's been a while since I have used it (have it on Xbone not PS4) but that baby fired as fast as the GoM.

its not the grasp, its the rapid fire controller...thats a fact and a problem
-
I have yet to take this pdx away from my Titan. Unless I had to.... ._.
-
Good post. Thanks for the info. I love my Grasp
-
Played mostly with pulse rifle since day one. Grasp is nice, but it doesn't come with High caliber rounds. Plus my pdx45 equips faster, helps when your secondary doesn't get the job done.

Edited by Lull9: 6/29/2016 5:06:43 AMI have a god roll Hawksaw, Perfect Balance/Counterbalance/Rifled Barrel and I use the SRO-37 ranged sight. The effective range is ridiculous and it's still very decent at close range. So consistent. I have a Grasp with Counterbalance and Smallbore. Don't like it. When I get kills with my Hawksaw I know the gun performed exactly as I wielded it. Grasp feels kind of RNG due to the high fire rate. Not as good at range either. But... I have a VERY good Hawksaw, so I'm spoiled.
-
I use my Aegis of the Reef for everything now. It's got Reinforced Barrel so it's a proper sniper.
-
My favorite grasp atm has counterbalance, perfect balance and third eye.
-
I miss the 2 burst messenger. Got a void one.
-
Do you like Final Duty? I have one with reflex scope, 100 stability (hand-laid stock), counterbalance, glass half-full. Haven't tried it in crucible yet.

Very informative post, thanks! Other than Grasp of Malok, a blue pulse rifle named PSI IV Alba is another solid choice within the same archetypes. Same highest RoF but one less perk tree. If you can get one to roll with any stability perk, it is basically a very fun gun to use. I have bought the vendor version of Hawksaw, up it to 335 but still doesn't have that connected feel to it. Got Aegis of the Reef drop the other day and love it! The Hawksaw ended up as infusion fuel. My personal preference will be the OG Nirwen's Mercy Lord Saladin sold during the first installment of IB when TTK started. Perhaps I tend to engage at mid to longer range I find NM fits my playstyle perfectly. Pair it with Fusion Rifle (Panta Rhei, Techeun Rage, Thessan, Plan C) or sidearms (Ironwreath, Queen's Choice).

Bump for stats

I have a grasp with glass half full, counter balance, and braced frame. Then i have a hawksaw with with full auto, hammer forged, injection mold. Not the best but gets job done. I prefer my grasp because of ttk with it, pick of one enemy then a sec and some times a third but have to finis third with grenade.

Edited by ojehosaphat: 6/29/2016 1:23:09 PMSo hopefully when they nerf them (because good=nerf for Bungo), they'll make it so that the high RoF pulses have similar (but less) damage fall-off to autos. Keeps it a beast in the short to short-mid range while not allowing it to outshoot a MIDA at the same effective range, because it currently does when you factor in scope bounce. It would be ideal if they brought back guaranteed two burst kills for the high impact pulses and left medium impact pulses as is. They are in a good spot and can stay where they're at as far as I'm concerned. I'm no fan of nerfs but it is disappointing when you have very good options in the medium and high impact builds but they are moot because they all mostly take three bursts to kill and high RoFs do it quickest and at pretty much the same range. And yes, I know that the high-impact pulses do two burst based on a low armor victim, but most people run highest armor builds so, again, that's a moot point. In my opinion, these reconfigurations make it so that the least damage is done to the weapons themselves while solidifying the roles they are built to play.

Just picked up a hawksaw from a crucible rank up package. Has fitted stock, full auto, and rifled barrel. I use gauntlets with pulse rifle loader so I don't miss the little bit of reload speed that rifled barrel takes away. I'm pretty happy with this pick up.
-
Grasp, because i like fast firing weapons which also need a little aim ass well. I actually dont use it with a sniper because i think doctrine and tlw fit alot better with a sniper.
-
Might be swimming against the tide here but I love my pdx-41. The ttk is lower when it's all headshots but that gun aims like heaven, I find it hard to miss with it and it's a magnet for headshots. It also aids me a lot on very long range gunplay with me outgunning snipers quite often. The one I have is almost perfect (it has one stupid perk otherwise amazing)and I wouldn't trade it for almost anything else
-
I'd say the PDX on my hunter has done well in IB so far.
-
Grasp mid to short range and nirwens for long range
-
Great post man. Very in depth breakdown of two archetypes.
