Brexit or Regrexit?

(Reuters) - To leave, or not to leave: that is the question. Still. After Britain's historic vote to leave the European Union, there is no indication that a so-called Brexit will happen soon. It maybe never will. Prime Minister David Cameron, who is resigning, has said he will not take the formal step to an EU divorce on the grounds that his successor should. Because the referendum is not legally-binding, some politicians are suggesting a parliament vote before formally triggering Brexit. A petition on the UK government's website on holding a second referendum has gained more than 3 million signatories in just two days. European leaders, facing the biggest threat to European unity since World War Two, are divided over how swiftly divorce talks should start. Paris wants haste and German Chancellor Angela Merkel is urging patience. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said he wanted to "start immediately". And on Sunday, Scotland's leader said Scotland may veto Brexit altogether. Under devolution rules, the parliaments of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales are required to consent to any EU divorce, according to a report by the House of Lords. David Lammy, a lawmaker for the opposition Labour Party, said it was within parliament's powers to call a second referendum and urged that it be done. Perhaps the most vocal resistance to a British exit is coming from Scotland. Scotland, a nation of five million people, voted to stay in the EU by 62 to 38 percent, compared to the 54 percent in England who voted to leave. Under the United Kingdom's complex arrangements to devolve some powers to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, legislation generated in London to set off an EU divorce would have to gain consent from the three devolved parliaments, according to a report by the House of Lords' European Union Committee. Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon told the BBC on Sunday that she would consider urging the Scottish parliament to block such a motion. It is not clear, however, whether such a scenario would ever materialize or be binding. Sturgeon's spokesman later said that the British government might not seek consent in the first place.

  • Just so you all know that petition is under investigation for fraud as it is suspected that bots and spammers did a large portion of the voting

    • I'm amazed at how little info there is on whom BENEFITS from a BREXIT. It seems to me, that this is a win for China, Russia and Iran. Not sure how this is a great thing for the UK because the UK will still need to adhere to the rules of the EU if it still wants to do business with the EU. I mean, if Ohio voted to leave the US, it's not like it can just do whatever it wants...everything from Energy to Licence plates would have to adhere to the same federal rules already being followed by the other states. Sticking with the Ohio example...what if you moved to Ohio from New York? Or Vice versa? What if one child was born in NY, and another in Ohio? Citizenship and even business laws for such cases and many more will need to be established. Have the costs of such, changes been calculated or explained? Without the UK, how will the EU resist the economic might of China and Russia? Dubya, threatened to leave NATO...what happens to the UK should that happen? Hopefully they have these simple questions and more already figured out.

    • It is doubted whether Scotland would have the legal power to veto it.

    • It seems that some of the Leave voters only voted Leave because they were misinformed on the consequences of Brexit and were seduced by the false promises made by the Leave campaign. They now feel the UK would be better off in the EU after all. The result was a knife edge. Nearly 50% if Brits want to stay and they feel empassioned to fight to the very end hence this petitions popularity. The referendum was merely round 1. With the economy in tatters and a divided nation this is far from over no matter what Nigel Farage wants.

        • I doubt a second referendum happens, nor should it really, but it sounds like Scotland will veto it all.

        • They won't make a second vote David Cameron already stated that a few hours ago. There isn't much to say Tbh, and it turns out a few thousand signatures in that were fake or something along the lines of cheating. So that mkinda damages it even more.

          • They're not going to repeat the referendum. Perhaps only if the petition gets more signatures than the turnout of the first referendum.
