In the mission "Siege of the Warmind" on earth, you're sent by Eris Morn to repel the hive assault on Rasputin in the Seraphim Vault. You can tell that the hive have attempted to access Rasputin just before Omnigoul appears and summons the Watchers of Crota major wizards. Just before this, however, on the computer monitor above which Omnigoul first spawns, you'll see flashes of Venus, Mars, Mercury, the Venus map, the Mars map, and schematics for vex goblin framework/bodies. immediately after this the computer monitor flashes a red and black coding and stops displaying any information
From watching the Rise of Iron trailer, it is heavily implicated that the "plague" (SIVA) is a technological virus that has the ability to infect and manipulate living organisms, as it clearly does with the Fallen that attempt to harness it. Throughout the trailer, the SIVA virus is given a textural appearance of digitalization. This is best exemplified in the scene where the Mutant Fallen Captain with the cannon-for-a-hand spawns from a red, digitalized fog. I know my imagery is not the best, but if you look into these two separate accounts, you'll see what I am talking about.
Also, while it isn't profoundly noticeable in the full, 1:47 Rise of Iron trailer, in the shorter 7 second teaser, you can hear an undeniably distinct Vex whirring noise immediately before the scene cuts away.
Combining all of that together and assuming that the virus visible in the Siege of the Warmind mission is related to or is SIVA, I believe we can reach at least one firm conclusion: The Vex are directly related to SIVA.
The Siege of the Warmind mission was an attempt by the Hive to gain access to Rasputin, but the Hive not being technological geniuses, may have activated this plague within Rasputin that he would have had to very quickly suppress, hence why Guardian intervention was so important. It's also important to note that on the screen in that mission, it is predominantly Vex controlled planets shown, along with Vex Goblin diagrams. If we take that into account with the distinctive Vex whirring heard in the trailer, I believe we can make the Vex connection to SIVA.
What does this mean? In pure speculative terms, I'll list what I believe this could bring about for the Rise of Iron DLC.
Note: I'll try to keep away from spinfoil-hat theories and only stick to ones that seem to have some evidence.
Note 2: It is much harder to speculate about Rise of Iron than it was for The Taken King, as the TTK trailer let us know that our enemy was indeed Oryx, and we knew some of his backstory, his connection into the main enemies and whatnot
Speculation begins now
The Plague is a creation of the Vex to try and infiltrate Rasputin so that they could better understand him for their simulations, as Vex technology could not mimic the actions of the Warmind. However, this plague wasn't strong enough to fully disable Rasputin, only to fuel his decision to become dormant. We know that a Warmind existed on each planet, and Rasputin displays Mercury, Venus and Mars - all Vex controlled planets - on his mainframe computer monitor thingy. Perhaps the Vex were able to disable other Warminds with this virus, but not Rasputin.
To me, this could also be a reason why the "Charlemagne's Vault" Raid Area was eventually cut from the game: we weren't ready in terms of the story. If Charlemagne and all the other Warminds are no longer active - as the story leads us believe - maybe this is why. With planetary Warminds inactive, the Vex are free to control and manipulate the planet as they wish. I think this next expansion will bring some clarity towards the Iron Lords, but I think from a storyteller's perspective, it will begin to tie together some of these questions we have had for so long.
SIVA doesn't seem like the type of thing that would've existed early on in the game's development, but perhaps it was added later on, because if I am correct, it could bridge a lot of gaps and answer a LOT of questions.
Feel free to shoot down my theory, add in and take away parts, but I believe these distinctive clues and pointers the Bungie storytellers have left give us a strong enough breadcrumb trail to come to this conclusion.
TL;DR The Dark Below alludes to connections between Rasputin and the Vex that we see again in Rise of Iron trailers. The plague was created by the Vex to infiltrate Warminds across the system so that they could understand them. The plague wiped out the Venus, Mercury and Mars Warminds, but Rasputin survived.
EDIT: Added images depicting the two instances of the plague's appearance
This is my first lore post, so let's see how this goes. Again, feedback of any sort is welcomed and appreciated. Contributions to this theory would be great.

Sorry man not it. First on the vex creation thing, siva was created by the scientist of earth as a powerful tool/weapon, the iron lords saw that it was corruption them(or something along those lines) and locked it away in the quarantine area(wall that gets blown away), by sacrificing themselves. Second the fallen dug it up saw its power and augmented themselves with it. Not it took them by force or second choice to the warmind.
-
Nice theory, but I read that SIVA was created during the golden age. I remember the computer going red during the omingul mission in Ra's bunker.. I think it was Rasputin locking the hive out of his systems or something.
-
That's a pretty awesome write up. Going back to your mention of the 7 second teaser, as well as the Vex like noise the this emerging from the dark also seem to have a single red eye. I agree that it might be a Vex made virus created to corupt rasputin but instead it's found a new host in the fallen and rather than cheat it's way to victory through infection simply uses force Or we just read into these things too much!
-
Dude you're all wrong, SIVA is a Bungie ploy to get our money! Look... SIVA S I V A VISA VISA = Money Bungie is trying to take our money! ~ Nyahh! =^,.,^=

Edited by SunBroWarrior: 6/17/2016 12:41:07 PMYou seem to understand a lot about the story, so I'll ask a question. What exactly was the the "darkness" that managed to destroy everything from the golden age?
-
Well, maybe SIVA was made to infect the vex?
-
Uh, wasn't SIVA created during the Golden Age?
-
These "Vex are related to SIVA!" theories are really starting to get annoying. (Not that I ever liked them in the first place)
-
Definitely the best SIVA theory I've heard so far. Additionally, Vex have red (like the SIVA) dots in their bodies so perhaps the Vex are the SIVA.
-
I agree with a lot of this, however SIVA was man made. Probably from the left overs of long dead vex remains found on venus. Or maybe they weren't dead, maybe they were dying. Would die? Would be there? Had been there? Were there? Time is such a hassle when you're dealing with the vex. Alright you know what everyone -blam!- time and the horse it rode in on.
-
Yup and if you pre-ordered ttk Cayde talked about the RoI.

Edited by WantedHero45: 6/17/2016 6:09:38 AMMy question is does this mean that the vex can now come to earth. I mean if SIVA is a Vex creation then this must be their way of answering to Athean's defeat at the Vault of Glass. Look when they released the trailer. Bungie said some interesting things. For example the city's Southern wall has fallen and the fallen have discovered a Plague. Maybe SIVA is the vex gateway to earth.
-
I believe you are onto something with the Vex link. It is implied in the lore that a ton of the Warmind technology originated from the Vex. That would also include SIVA. But I don't think the Vex directly created it. On a side note, during Crota's wakening it could be presumed that Omnigul and the Hive invaded Rasputin in search of SIVA. But before that, Psion Flayers were deployed on Mars by the Cabal to dig around in the AI's central cortex. They were trying to access Mars's Warmind in search of something that might be SIVA. Then, on the mission that you go to get the cloaking codes from Rasputin in order to take Crota's soul, the Taken are there. Maybe they too were looking for SIVA. Finally, the most prominent point is the Fallen S.A.B.E.R. We are led to believe that it was deployed to crack Rasputin's systems and take control of Golden Age space weapons. But maybe it was the Devil's first attempt at locating SIVA? Guess we won't know till Rise of Iron.
-
Sorry to burst the bubble, but it's stated that SIVA is a "breakthrough in self-replicating nanotechnology from the Golden Age". It probably has nothing to do with Vex.
-
Great theory and thread, while I don't have my own take on it I will watch with interest. Its quite cool to think that we have so many unanswered questions and ways in which destiny could go in future. We know the cabal sent a distress signal... weve heard nothing else. We speculate that the queen is alive, somewhere... We speculate who Eris was talking to at the end of TTK, and we know of Oryx other sisters. We have the theory in this thread on SIVA, and the whole vex history, alternate timeline thing We know Osiris is alive, somewhere. The whole mystery of the traveller There are fallen houses that we know very little about. If the lore was in game it would be amazing, however there is a lot that Destiny can do in future to link everything together.
-
I found a red box with wires coming off of it on Mars. Would that be SIVA?
-
Edited by PopSkimo: 6/18/2016 12:39:48 AMNope. Nothing to do with the vex AND no offence to bungie, I don't think they're capable of thinking that far ahead and putting something subtle in the first DLC. It's just not a thing that bungie would've done that early on.
-
Doesn't the arachnid gear look alot like SIVA?
-
The screen is red. It isn't SIVA
-
The devs already said it was a golden age piece of tech.
-
I think there is a red cube of weird matter that is an Artifact from an Awoken who found it on Venus. It looks sorta digitized and they're 'not sure what it is.'
-
From all the information we've received, i'm almost 100% certain that SIVA was a human made virus (For reasons unknown atm) and the virus was locked away underneath earth by the iron lords.
-
I just realized that there is a multiplayer map called European plague zone. This might refer to SIVA. It might be European Flood zone. But that just sounds like it's from Halo. There's a theory in itself there.

Self Imitating Virus Assembly Secret Intelligent Vast Armory Super Industrial Vestigial Additions
SivaIsVeryAcronym
Yeah did in the pocket infinity and sleeper simulant to. Both would appear to be the result of experimentation with vex tech and also resemble the tech of Rasputin and SIVA. I think SIVA was a golden age experiment on vex tech that was discovered before they became active again. This could also be tied into the origins of exos. A controlled SIVA could potentially serve the purpose of converting a dying human body to a machine body. Now if it's vex based thatd make it a living machine that likely could become self aware in time which would explain its current form. It's also possible that the vex might be tied into some kind of causality loop with this with SIVA as both an origin point and a biproduct. The vex might even be built to contain SIVA. There's lots of possibilities for what can be done with the story.

I hate myself for reading this Becouse I kinda want this to happen but come on we know bungie can't do this. It's said that a well paid company's stories are shite compared to players ideas. Bungie ... **** you...
