Considering Replacing My Xbox One Hard Drive
(Video above is relevant in the second paragraph)
November 2016 is approaching and than means my 3 year warranty is about to expire, thus opening the door to freely crack open and clean my console without fear of voiding Microsoft doctrine. I've been planning on replacing the internal drive for some time now, from 500 gigs to a solid 2000. The only concern now is how to go about doing this.
Let me start by saying no. I don't want an external drive that will just sit on or near my Xbone, connected via a USB 2.0 and cable. That's where this product comes in: in the video above, a reviewer goes over an extension of the Xbox one console that takes 2.5" HDDs and uses them externally. Not only that but it secures safely to the console and provides you with three USB 3.0 ports on the front. It also blends with the design of the console, keeping the external drive in an easily accessible location.
The other option involves purchasing the drive on its own and manually formatting it to run on the console. This means taking the existing drive out and using Linux to set up the new drive. It involves more work but less of a cost. The Collective Minds product & Samsung HDD ring in at around $150 on Amazon, whereas the HDD alone is only $101.
I'm willing to admit, I'm not the most tech savvy person on these forums, but there exist step by step guides on both of these methods that any person could follow. So I'll give you guys the floor, what's your two cents? Is one option more preferable? Please, do tell.
TL;DR: Tucker has little storage space, Tucker wants storage space, storage space costs money, tell Tucker what you think.

1 ReplyYou already said no to an external drive but I just want to say I got 2tb external and it was exactly what I needed. It was so easy to set up and move over all my games, I was very impressed. I can't imagine messing around with my xbone just to increase storage. That's just my two cents anyway :)

1 ReplyI would say make sure toy know exactly what you're doing. You're getting 1500 more gigabytes, awesome,but if you mess up not only have you wasted you're money,you have a broken console now as well. I would wait to see if a new console is coming out personally. Save up for that one,would be better since you could get 1000+ gigabytes with it and it will be the new "next gen" for a while.

The Xbone doesn't really benefit from using a SSD (you can Google this if you're interested) so you can save yourself the dosh there. I've seen this thing in BestBuy and the idea seems really jeuvinille to me. Those extra USB ports are still routed through that one; hence they share the bus and will be 3* slower/less powerful than just using that one. Hello bottleneck. The Xbone already has such a huge footprint and strapping on another chunk of plastic seems silly to me, but to each their own. Horribly composed pic related. 3TB internal 2.5" inside of an external adapter. You could tape the cord to the xbox if it bothered you, I guess. Works flawlessly. I can hide it behind the console if I wanted to as well. Cost me $12 CAD because I recently upgraded my computer to all SSDs and had the pleasure 3TB spare. I did read that you don't want an external. The swap is easy to do, so why not? :D P.S.: The Xbox will format the drive itself, after asking you if you want to use it for the system.

2 RepliesI think dumping any more mony into that platform is a waist of money, Tucker. And don't bother with a usb spreader, that shit's gonna be slow as hell. Also I'm pretty sure the xbone doesn't have any usb 3.0 ports, but I could be wrong. I haven't looked at mine in awhile.

I highly recommend it. I've also taken the time to clone a HDD and I promise it's not worth the hassle and due to the way the Xbox partitions the drive, you'll need to redo the whole thing every time there's a new update for the OS. Total pain in the ass. I do not recommend.

5 RepliesJust buy external. A 1tb hardrive isn't too expensive on Amazon and if you move everything you play over there then your games will load faster.
