My personal story
Recently, I took a very, VERY long hiatus from Destiny to play most of the new games that came out (i.e. Overwatch, Doom) and some old games (i.e. Halo series, Bonerlands, etc). Keep in mind that before I took this break, I'd played Destiny almost every single day for a year and a half. I was playing Doom when I was using the "Double Shotty Combo" (both combat shotgun and super shotgun) and I was top of the leaderboards when I thought, "This shit needs to be nerfed", followed by, "WHAT MANNER OF SISSYNESS IS THIS? Just because something is performing well, it needs to be nerfed?" That little voice in the back of my head said that that's how Destiny manages to keep it's exotics in check. Then it dawned on me, that feeling I hadn't felt in a long time. I was having FUN in Doom, where I hadn't had fun in Crucible since before HoW, before the dark times. At that moment, I realized something.
DESTINY'S FANS HAVE RUINED THE GAME: A History Lesson
When Destiny launched back in September 2014, exotics were described as the best of the best, weapons obtained by feats of strength, the hardest activities in the game, etc. Ok, maybe all that didn't pan out, but the part about the best of the best was at least still true.
Ice Breaker hit like a truck and had ammo to spare, Invective was the only true fully automatic shotgun, Gjallarhorn was the best boss melter in the game, Red Death could keep you in the fight longer, a Crucible gun with Crucible lore, designed for Crucible, The Last Word had an actual reason to hip-fire, Thorn not only stopped Regen, but also did damage.
Then came the Mythoclast, the first gun worth calling a nerf for. The fair few people who actually got the gun, or got paired up realized this gun was broken. People getting 4 shot cross mapped, killed through walls because of Fusion rifle hit-scan, other nerf-worthy incidents. Bungie stomped out a weed before it became a problem, good for them. Then came Suros. A little less nerf-worthy, but certainly a problem. Then all was good, a few patches here and there, but nothing compared to the newest meta; The HoW Meta. Thorn, TLW, and Red Death. The 9 months meta.
Thorn was kept in check by a low ammo count with slow reload. The Last Word was kept in check by actually requiring skill to accurately hip-fire. Red Death was always a good choice in Crucible. Then Thorn's ammo count was buffed to 150%, with a reload twice as fast, The Last Word was glitched to not require hip-fire, and Red Death was thrown in as practically the only counter for them. Ever since then, the Forums are constantly plagued by calls for nerfs, buffs, outlandishly ludicrous changes to be made, leading to the destruction of the best weapons in the game.
EXOTICS ARE NOW MOSTLY OBSOLETE
Think back to when you got your first exotic. You probably didn't get it fighting the Gas Wyrms of Jupiter, or helping to defend Twilight Gap or the Battle of Six Fronts. You probably got it from something mundane, like as a Strike reward or bottom of the team in Crucible or being a dreaded Xurner. But it didn't matter, it was special to you. "Wow, this weapon shoots poison!" "My gun reloads after every kill!" "This rifle regenerates ammo, that's so cool." It was a magical moment for most all of us, a weapon to be proud of. Now think about someone who just picked up the game recently, someone who is running around with his gunsmith Suros auto rifle rolled with glass half full and focused fire. He places 3rd in the crucible and gets the Suros Regime. "Oh wow, an exotic!" He compares the stats. "My legendary is better in every single way to this crappy exotic." His friend, with equally bad luck, finishes King's Fall and gets Thunderlord. But wait, he rolled a Qullim's Terminus with feeding frenzy. Who needs to waste an exotic slot when you already have a weapon that does the same job, and then some. Now their 3rd friend has ridiculously good luck and gets a god-roll Grasp of Malok on his first run of the Omnigul. When he gets back to the Tower, he decides an engram and gets Bad Juju. "Oh yeah, new exotic!" But the stats on Bad Juju are worse than Grasp of Malok, and he's already got 100% Intellect.
As it stands in the game now, there are very few exotics worth trading a legendary equivalent for. The Last Word has lost any reason to be hip-fired anymore, Suros feels like an overshined legendary gunsmith order, Tlauloc feels like a poor man's Mida Multitool, which is one of the few surviving exotics, almost every heavy machine gun being used is Qullim's Terminus, Thorn shoots tickle darts that do no damage and last about the time it takes to blink, Touch of Malice is literally only used on Oryx and Sisters, I could go on but I think I've made my point. Most of the current Exotics in this game don't really feel 'Exotic' anymore. They just feel like workhorses with a different paint job, and are often times outclassed by other legendaries, or their class it so rigid that there are better options for almost every single activity. (Looking at you Dreg's Promise) Exotics are becoming nothing more than novelty items, things to be flaunted, then switched out or used as a joke. I, for one, can no longer stand the abuse and mistreatment of Exotics any longer, but you can help for just pennies a day. Call 1(800)-555-EXOTIC to cast your vote on whether we should keep exotics on our level, or elevate them to their previous godhood, or just select a choice above.

I remember getting ice breaker when it meant something. For several weeks I equipped it when strolling through the tower. It was great. Now the only exotic I use Is year two dragons breath. The rest of my exotics really do not compare to the new exotics. From hung jury to soul breakers claw, most exotics just don't stack up against them. I do use the three of coins to get exotics, just to infuse them into my legendary 's. The strutting your stuff with that hard earned exotic days are over.

I do understand and agree with some of the points you are making but instead of "Bungie plz buff exotics make em OP" I believe the community should ask for balance. Destiny 2 will be completely different, it has to because so far this game got only buffs and nerfs but no balance. Wanting back Ghorn so we can all melt bosses and Ice Breaker so we can cheese activities its not the way to go. If exotics where so God Tier in Y1 why isn't anyone wishing for all of them? Even back then you could have been randomly rewarded a Thunderlord and anyone would had curse the Gods because they did not bestow you with the mighty Ghorn. Back in the day if you where bestowed with the God Tier Exotic Hard Light, how did your PvP encounter fare vs Suros? So many examples can be given...from an rpg stats point of view Destiny has always relied on broken weapons meta PvE and PvP alike.

Very well stated post... The mighty Gjallahorn... Borderlands 1, "pele" volcano sniper rifle... Borderlands 2, "the Maggie", "the slagga", "the norfleet", obtaining those weapons made your character feel "exotic... When I found " the pele" sniper rifle in Borderlands 1, that was the only weapon I used until I beat the game, or until I ran out of ammo, destroying everything with that weapon, melting enemies... Just plain out fun to use... Made the game fun... The exotics have became dull and dormant within the Destiny universe... I cling to my hung jury like a two year old would a teddy bear, no other primary is more efficient, more applicable for most situations, and it has the "icarus" perk on it... Exotics should be just that, "exotic"... These weapons are mediocre, there is no " awe" to there usage... They are situational... This game, is mostly appealing to an individuals level of skill... But to wield the mighty Gjallahorn, to have the option to One shot a pack of red bar enemies from a distance, and still present enough of a threat to a yellow bar enemy to keep him in Check before reload with the formerly hard hitting"hawkmoon", was a delight that made wielding these exotics, more, well, " exotic"... Maybe the developers understand the behavior of the game world masses better then we even know ourselves... Wielding the strongest weapons for a time, alienates others, and brings a bordem to the atmosphere, but to honest with you, nothing was more fun, then pulling out the mighty Gjallahorn, jumping back far enough in the air twice, with low energy, and wiping out a pack of an unexpected enemy crowd with one blast, as the last player living on my fireteam, doing the nightfall, and preventing the depressing drama that besets a fireteam when you have to restart and reinvest... The mightiest weapons in the land, should be, "mighty"...

Tlaloc is a poor man's Mida? You got it back to front, Mida is a poor mans/Titan/Hunter's Tlaloc

Exotics should be god-tier. They should also be extremely rare. It's what you pull out when something really nasty needs to be put down. And I realize I'm about to put myself out in the cold but, exotics should not be usable in the crucible. If you want exotics to be worth being rare then they can't be included in the pvp meta. If you want to use exotics in pvp then they have to be balanced against the other weapons.
-
AGREED. I also feel like exotics are WAY to common and easy to get. I remember in Vannila Destiny if you saw a guy with a Suros or mythoclast, you knew they went through the grind of hell and, were probably going to kick your ass. Now, you see a guy with an Exotic, you hardly notice it. If Bungie wants balance all they have to do is make the exotic drop rate 3 out of 100 and, then buff all exotics back to their most prime days. BALANCE.

Gjallarhorn would of survived only if the bosses it was being used one weren't tied down to the ground. Literally everything in Destiny so far aside from the shade of Oryx walks on the ground which makes Gjallarhorn too safe with no risk.

I'm no good at pvp but the sandbox boys over at bungie gang -blam!- pve to appease pvp players..... Now? Well, it's a whole lot less fun. My favorite time in pvp was when red death and those were good. From there all they needed to do was buff autos amd fusions! No need to fuk with anything else. Also, the subclass, pvp driven nerfs struck pve. Cmon bungie. Let's try out a new lead dev fpr the sandbox team. Let someone neq take the helm of that ship for destiny 2. Can't deny the shootimg Mechanics and addictive "qualities"(lol) of this game. Despite them actively hurting the fun factor several times, I'll admit i still like it. Madness haha Op, i agree w ya bud. Good post
-
All bungie need to is only apply then refs to pvp only. Like there is no reason they can't do that. That way they can bring back all exotics to year 2 and use whatever they want in pve or pvp and not have to worry about nerfs and such
-
Slightly off topic but I think exotics dropping at less than your equipped light level is not cool at all.
-
I basically use only these exotics. Touch of malice, black spindle, bad juju, raze lighter and Armamentarium, bones of eao, voidfang vestments and Khepris Sting. The rest are shard fodder.
-
Sleeper and the swords are the only exotics that feel exotic. I'd like to see special and primary exotics get a huge buff.

Cheeseburger

Take exotics out of pvp and the problem is solved. If anything they would boost them... Actually never mind, they nerfed a few exotics that were primarily used in pve because they don't want us to have too much fun.
-
I can see your point and can agree with most everything. I use the sleeper on all 3 characters and the spindle in the raid and you forget about the only new primary with a burn the supercell and I still use lots of other exotics. So all hope is not lost. I try and rotate my characters load outs every few weeks to spice things up a bit lol
-
I remember when I first got my gjallarhorn. Oh baby, you can bet your sweet ass my inbox was full of invites to raids and strikes, especially on solar damage nightfalls. It really did make you feel powerful. And I agree with you, I don't feel that way anymore.

I don't think they should be god tier, they just shouldn't be getting consistently outclassed by legendary weapons.

-
Exotics are worthless anymore just take up a slot for nonsense so many legendary weapons are better exotics use to be special but all these bullshit nerfs make them worthless except a select few like tom or truth rest are poop compared to there legendary counterparts

the results of this poll shows how retarded people are on the fourum

Destiny lost everything that actually DID make it feel special

It's been a while since I've streamed the name is iCS headshotz twitch.tv/jmcgrube37link Will be doin raffles and priority will go to donators

Not god tier but different enough to compliment a play style much better than a legendary.

Edited by Rebellis: 6/7/2016 3:33:49 AMDestiny's weapon development is an epic fail. You get to a certain point in the game where legendaries that aren't god-rolls are instant dismantles, which then defeats the purpose of Exotics and turns them into infusion fodder. At this point, its gotten so out of whack. By Bungie not separating PvP from PvE and nerfing everything, weapons are more bland than ever, which creates a demand for god-rolls, which leads to dismantling anything that's not, which leads to Exotics being infusion fodder, which leads to bland weapons, which creates a demand for god-rolls, and on and on. Its like being stuck in an endless loop and the only way to make it stop is to quit and hope D2 is something different.
