My personal story
Recently, I took a very, VERY long hiatus from Destiny to play most of the new games that came out (i.e. Overwatch, Doom) and some old games (i.e. Halo series, Bonerlands, etc). Keep in mind that before I took this break, I'd played Destiny almost every single day for a year and a half. I was playing Doom when I was using the "Double Shotty Combo" (both combat shotgun and super shotgun) and I was top of the leaderboards when I thought, "This shit needs to be nerfed", followed by, "WHAT MANNER OF SISSYNESS IS THIS? Just because something is performing well, it needs to be nerfed?" That little voice in the back of my head said that that's how Destiny manages to keep it's exotics in check. Then it dawned on me, that feeling I hadn't felt in a long time. I was having FUN in Doom, where I hadn't had fun in Crucible since before HoW, before the dark times. At that moment, I realized something.
DESTINY'S FANS HAVE RUINED THE GAME: A History Lesson
When Destiny launched back in September 2014, exotics were described as the best of the best, weapons obtained by feats of strength, the hardest activities in the game, etc. Ok, maybe all that didn't pan out, but the part about the best of the best was at least still true.
Ice Breaker hit like a truck and had ammo to spare, Invective was the only true fully automatic shotgun, Gjallarhorn was the best boss melter in the game, Red Death could keep you in the fight longer, a Crucible gun with Crucible lore, designed for Crucible, The Last Word had an actual reason to hip-fire, Thorn not only stopped Regen, but also did damage.
Then came the Mythoclast, the first gun worth calling a nerf for. The fair few people who actually got the gun, or got paired up realized this gun was broken. People getting 4 shot cross mapped, killed through walls because of Fusion rifle hit-scan, other nerf-worthy incidents. Bungie stomped out a weed before it became a problem, good for them. Then came Suros. A little less nerf-worthy, but certainly a problem. Then all was good, a few patches here and there, but nothing compared to the newest meta; The HoW Meta. Thorn, TLW, and Red Death. The 9 months meta.
Thorn was kept in check by a low ammo count with slow reload. The Last Word was kept in check by actually requiring skill to accurately hip-fire. Red Death was always a good choice in Crucible. Then Thorn's ammo count was buffed to 150%, with a reload twice as fast, The Last Word was glitched to not require hip-fire, and Red Death was thrown in as practically the only counter for them. Ever since then, the Forums are constantly plagued by calls for nerfs, buffs, outlandishly ludicrous changes to be made, leading to the destruction of the best weapons in the game.
EXOTICS ARE NOW MOSTLY OBSOLETE
Think back to when you got your first exotic. You probably didn't get it fighting the Gas Wyrms of Jupiter, or helping to defend Twilight Gap or the Battle of Six Fronts. You probably got it from something mundane, like as a Strike reward or bottom of the team in Crucible or being a dreaded Xurner. But it didn't matter, it was special to you. "Wow, this weapon shoots poison!" "My gun reloads after every kill!" "This rifle regenerates ammo, that's so cool." It was a magical moment for most all of us, a weapon to be proud of. Now think about someone who just picked up the game recently, someone who is running around with his gunsmith Suros auto rifle rolled with glass half full and focused fire. He places 3rd in the crucible and gets the Suros Regime. "Oh wow, an exotic!" He compares the stats. "My legendary is better in every single way to this crappy exotic." His friend, with equally bad luck, finishes King's Fall and gets Thunderlord. But wait, he rolled a Qullim's Terminus with feeding frenzy. Who needs to waste an exotic slot when you already have a weapon that does the same job, and then some. Now their 3rd friend has ridiculously good luck and gets a god-roll Grasp of Malok on his first run of the Omnigul. When he gets back to the Tower, he decides an engram and gets Bad Juju. "Oh yeah, new exotic!" But the stats on Bad Juju are worse than Grasp of Malok, and he's already got 100% Intellect.
As it stands in the game now, there are very few exotics worth trading a legendary equivalent for. The Last Word has lost any reason to be hip-fired anymore, Suros feels like an overshined legendary gunsmith order, Tlauloc feels like a poor man's Mida Multitool, which is one of the few surviving exotics, almost every heavy machine gun being used is Qullim's Terminus, Thorn shoots tickle darts that do no damage and last about the time it takes to blink, Touch of Malice is literally only used on Oryx and Sisters, I could go on but I think I've made my point. Most of the current Exotics in this game don't really feel 'Exotic' anymore. They just feel like workhorses with a different paint job, and are often times outclassed by other legendaries, or their class it so rigid that there are better options for almost every single activity. (Looking at you Dreg's Promise) Exotics are becoming nothing more than novelty items, things to be flaunted, then switched out or used as a joke. I, for one, can no longer stand the abuse and mistreatment of Exotics any longer, but you can help for just pennies a day. Call 1(800)-555-EXOTIC to cast your vote on whether we should keep exotics on our level, or elevate them to their previous godhood, or just select a choice above.

u mad breh?

Edited by Rebellis: 6/6/2016 2:10:11 PMIf you can get it through 3oC drops or buy it from Xur, Bungie has made sure it's a piece of crap and not worth the slot. The swords are really the only exotics that actually feel exotic and useful, but even they are situational versus normal swords. Destiny shifting to being a mostly PvP game pretty much killed off exotic weaponry.
-
Edited by STEL: 6/6/2016 2:22:01 PMCompletely agree. The Exotic's now suck and have no worth, their perks are awful. The Y1's had good perks, and had something that separated them from an Legendary. The few Exotics that remain; and did actually anything have been nerfed so much because of the community's winy noobs complain about everything. They suck so much now Legendary's should become Exotics, and the Exotics should become Exotics. I would play PvP and get decimated by the Thorn. Instead of coming to the forums and complaining, I grinded the hell out of the Thorn Quest. It did take me a while but I got it. Now I cant use it. The only thing I can use it for is to put it in my vault and remember the time when an Exotic actually had any worth.
-
BUMP. I want to use red death, but everytime I do, I get stomped by Mida and legendary weapons.
-
I think all exotic primaries should have elemental damage. That's a reasonable middle round for me to not make them OP but at the same time feel more unique and exotic
-
I don't think that exotics should be "god-tier", but certainly be better or comparable to the best legendaries available in each gun class. They are most of the time worse then the best legendary weapons (and it was not like for most of Year 1). I have at least a couple legendaries in every gun class that are better then my best exotics (the ones I am missing I do not care enough about to grind for because I already have better legendary weapons). Exotics have become mostly irrelevant at this point. P.S. The only exotics I regularly use now are Midi Multitool, Bad Juju, and Tlaloc, because they still great in PVP.
-
Tis a sad day when I choose my finnalas peril over thorn. But, since the recent thorn nerf (that was definitely unneeded) it's been happening alot.
-
An additional option, albeit in line with god tier like. Exotics should never be worse than best legendarys, but alternatively or in addition to, they should provide unique benefits that change gameplay. Obviously finely tuned and balanced for pvp and pve.
-
Maybe in PvE. Absolutely NOT in PvP.
-
Exotics are better though

Edited by SamSu916: 6/6/2016 1:51:31 PMI wouldn't say they should all be god-tier but I'd like to see them offer something that's "different" from the rest. Mida-Multitool is the perfect example. It's essentially a legendary but it offers very swift and high awareness gameplay. You end up strafing more often and on a constant lookout for people trying to flank you. The Last Word before it got taken down a notch was just straight up overpowered. That's something I would not like to see. People can say OH IT HAS NO RANGE THAT'S THE BALANCE. No, you are lying to yourself and worse of all lying to others. Because the hipfire damage was SO high that even if it wasn't fighting in its intended range, the damage dropoff was not enough to cover the fact that it still downs you from outside of its intended range way quicker than you can down them. Then you move into the intended range and this ends being way worse as the power grows exponentially.
-
Honestly this community has no one to blame but itself, you can't cry nerf then, make post like this. What's done is done, just don't make the same mistake when the next set of exotics come out...
-
Exotics are not supposed to be OP, bungie have said this
-
Exotics should be unique. Not necessarily better than legendaries. Just unique.
-
If exotic weapons are to be god-like, then there has to be a risk/reward/skill modifier attached to each one. To get the most from an exotic weapon, you must have to put the efforts into learning them.
-
Sees suros is the most dominant weapon and the problem in early year 1. Nerf auto rifles for no reason that will fix it.
-
In my opinion all exotics should be directed to PvE only, keep the PvP side balanced to avoid other massacres such as Thorn. If Exotics have more PvE directed Perks they'd be much more satisfying and entertaining to use.
-
Needs a TLDR very badly
-
TLDR is nerd MIDA and TLW?
-
The problem is that they drop from everywhere now. It's a cool feeling to see one...until you realize you already have 8 of them and it's just infusion fuel. You get 2 at the same time from some patrol boss which turn into sweet gear, and then you go on some long quest for...Boolean Gemeni..... Quests are great. That gun isn't.
-
I wouldn't say god tier, but definitely should be better than your average exotic. I do like the few legendary weapons that can make its way on to the board though, like godly rolled Eyaslunas or doctrine of passing with CB.
-
The fix for exotics would be to counter the weapons with armor. Such as an exotic helm form any class should have a slight increase to armor when damage is inflicted by any primary weapon that is Hip Fired. Or a counter to MIDA without ruining the weapon would be high caliber rounds fired from a primary weapon has a slight chance to stagger when an exotic chest piece is equipped, once staggered the armor piece increases agility for a brief moment to allow evasion. Another good one is Thorn, when an exotic arm piece is equipped and DOT occurs from a primary weapon, melee and grenade recharge rapidly as well as a brief moment of agility boost. This gives the player a chance to counter a gun fight with a grenade or melee as well as added speed. It's the simple things that should counter an exotic weapon. Leave exotic weapons un-nerf and buff exotic armor. Every exotic weapon should have a counter and it should be exotic armor. Let PvP become more of a chest game when exotics come into play. That way nothing gets touched in PvE.
-
Exotics should be borderline impossible to get and they should be god-tier. If not, then they should be the new purples.
-
I agree for the most part. I would say though that as far as exotics go; Tlaloc. Beastly: a top tier weapon that will outgun every primary in the game, all other factors being equal. No way is this a poor man's Mida. Mida: Just the movement buff alone, reload, hit-box, AA.... Bad Juju: Under-rated these days but a great PvE weapon for mob-clearance and team work. Hereafter: Much improved and a great noise. Thunderlord: Ex perk is a monster and the noise! Bolt-caster: Often overlooked. Ranged attack (very effective). Telesto: Unique weapon with high DPS. Mote Carlo: Another great perk and useful for strong Strength builds. Could do with a bit of an impact buff though. I think some of them could do with a bit of TLC but the list above does represent some pretty good choices.
-
They should not be more powerful than legendaries. That isn't what "exotic" means.
-
They should do the same DPS (assuming Bungie knew how to spell "balance") but achieve that in an "exotic" way. You could have them do higher DPS if you separated PvE and PvP gear, but that's more math and item development than Bungie can handle.
