The days were people needed to actually farm materials to upgrade gear and weapons. (Need spin metal farm earth) and let's not forget we needed shards to also upgrade our gear. (Only obtainable from the raid. For the most part).
Now all you need are weapon/armor parts and you can buy materials from the gunsmith and the vanguard vendor.

We raided cuz we needed ascended energy!
