Before I begin, I want to point out that I am NOT associated with Bungie at all. What I'm about to say is purely speculation and I have no evidence to support my claims. So, it's safe to say that we all need those spinfoil hats.
Secondly, this is a 4:00 a.m. ramble, so you might need to read this a few times.
In the Halo series, Master Chief was the main character. It was Him that was fighting the Covenant, but so many people played as Master Chief. Up to the millions of people were playing as Master Chief but in the story, ONLY Chief was the main (playable) character.
How can this work in Destiny? Destiny is the story of us. It is the story of us becoming legend. But how can this work if there are so many of us? Thousands of people killed Oryx in King's Fall, but who is the true Kingslayer? It can't be the people that did it the day of the raid's release, then everyone afterwards would be useless. But how could we ALL slay Oryx simultaneously? How can we ALL be Kingslayers?
*Clenches spinfoil hat* Unless, it is tied into Destiny itself.
Think back to Vanilla Destiny, when Vault of Glass was a myth to most players. Just prior to The Dark Below, people said that Atheon could be beat over and over because Vex wanted Atheon back, so they went to an alternate reality where Atheon lived. This was proven true. Vex would hop to a time line where Atheon was still alive. Since time couldn't be rewritten, Atheon was bound to die in THAT time line as well. So, what if the Vex had a major role in Destiny the game itself? *Hangs on to spinfoil hat for dear life*
Has anyone wondered why the Vex were the first endgame bosses? Why were they the first threat? I mean, it's obvious the Hive is the source of all Darkness, they should be the primary focus. Wrong! Has anyone thought that Bungie made Destiny around the Vex for a reason? A reason that includes multiple time lines.
Destiny is an MMO-RPG because every guardian/every three guardians/every six guardians are living a different time line built by the Vex! *Spinfoil hat rips*
Think about it, because of the Vault of Glass there are thousands of simulation universes for Atheon to live in, just in case he dies in one. At the same time, those simulation universes is a universe in which each individual one us IS the guardian(s) that becomes legend.
So, when we are at the Tower, we are seeing guardians that are the Legend of their own time line. We can't touch them because they are in their own alternate reality. We can still see them because all of the realities are meshed together by the sheer force that is the Vault of Glass.
Long story short, Bungie made the Vex and the Vault of Glass the first endgame boss to explain how several thousands of guardians could be The Legend simultaneously. I would really like to hear what you guys have to think.
Keep fighting, Guardians

It's, by definition, an MMO.
