I often hear people talking about "memes", dank memes, and all that jazz. I see a lot of fuss over this word, but I just don't get it. I've never heard of this word before. So tell me, Offtopic: What is a "meme"?

A meme, traditionally, is an idea or phrase that passes on from person to person on the Internet. These memes normally take form in images, but some might be phrases as well. Memes can then be edited for different purposes and situations, allowing them to be used as a joke or punchline. One of the more recent, if not cancerous, examples of a widespread meme is "Damn, Daniel!" It started out as a vine and, over time, spread from individual to individual as an inside joke. It gradually grew into a multicultural phenomenon and transcended into a meme. All around, people would take their own spin on Damn Daniel to suit their needs. There are generally accepted categories of memes as well. The most defined of these categories is the "dank meme," which has evolved into its own form of genre, if you will. Examples of dank memes include MLG, Mountain Dew/Doritos, and loud obnoxious Dubstep music. Another genre of meme is the "rage comic." In these short comic strips, various poorly-drawn characters would trade banter with each other until one of them began to rage. Perhaps the most popular meme of all time, the Trollface, originated from these comics. TL;DR - A meme is an Internet fad that is spread from person to person until it becomes famous.

A meme can be many things 1. A retarded inside joke on the Internet. These usually spew out of Vine or 4chan and are regurgitated by 10 year olds simply for the sake of saying them-- these don't really have any applications to real-life situations, and thus, can be used in any situation. (For example, "deez nuts" is a meme that started with some guy shouting "deez nuts" into a phone. Because "deez nuts" literally has no meaning, it can be applied to virtually any situation.) 2. An image with a caption in large bold letters. These are usually references to movies or games that can be used to express outside situations and ideas. Funny memes, in this sense, usually hold some truth. (For example, "one does not simply" is a reference to the Fellowship of the Ring, in which Boromir explains something that seems possible but is much more difficult in practice. The actual quote is "one does not simply walk into Mordor." It can turned into a meme by modifying the quote, like so: "one does not simply win an argument with their mom." )

Memes are something that transcends art. It's something that can unify society or tear it apart. It can bring tears to your eyes, whether they're tears of joy or sadness. Memes are simply... memes. Nothing more, nothing less. And I meme it.

A meme (/ˈmiːm/ meem) is "an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture". That's what the interwebz says

I prefer memes over dreams
A meme (/ˈmiːm/ meem) is "an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture". A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols, or practices that can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena with a mimicked theme. Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural analogues to genes in that they self-replicate, mutate, and respond to selective pressures.
