At the beginning of the April Update, I was rank 6 in crucible on my hunter, since I don't usually play much crucible. Since then I have ranked up to 22, thanks to tons of bounties, grinding, and rep boosters.
Out of all the rank up packages so far, I haven't received anything but armor. Specifically chest armor and boots. No cloaks, no helmets, and no gauntlets. Just chest armor and boots.
I started to do some math, and here's what I got: (correct me if I'm wrong)
-there are 22 items that you can get
-2 of those are chest armor and boots (duh)
-that means that there is a ~9% chance of getting chest armor or boots
The chance of getting chest armor or boots 16 times in a row would end up being 5/1000, or 0.5%.
There is no way that any of this is RNG anymore. If you look at the rewards, the odds of getting a weapon is 17:5. So I should be getting weapons more often, right? Or are armor pieces more heavily weighted? If they are, then that means that it isn't a random number generator.
Thanks for reading this far.

Feeling you man I have used over 1500 of coins had every rng exotic between 3-10 times except the jade rabbit

Edited by bilbo t baginzz: 5/9/2016 11:35:34 AMThe items seem to be weighted... but still random. Kind of like a poker machine... its totally random right? but its programmed to make more money then it pays out.

It's not Pure or Virtual Random. It's called a weighted algorithm, but certainly uses a Random Number Generator (RNG) to select between the items of the weighted results.

Destiny is a very clever creation, designed to prey on people like you who feel compelled to collect everything. To "reward" people with just enough to keep them playing tens of hours a week, hundreds of hours a month. What would you do if they "changed" the "RNG" and you were able to grind out every item you need in a week? Probably stop playing. And even if you wouldn't, a lot of people would.

Edited by Swarlly: 5/10/2016 8:52:35 PMLets just say if Dealbreaker or Questing Beast/ havoc pigeon combo was the meta I'd have a god roll on all three of my characters.

This is what RNG thinks of you
-
Edited by xl mderms lx: 5/9/2016 8:21:50 PMYou apparently have no clue how their rng works, your statics hold zero relevance because you have no idea how many numbers populate the proposed odds....all you know is the odds haven't hit for what you've wanted. Until you add up all individual pieces of loot, plus all else that can drop, you won't know the rng pool. And even if you did data mine that information, your odds never increase... The pool resets, an item is never deducted from the pool once you get it.
-
All i get are long bows and grim citz. I did get a morgue and a zombie though.
-
I don't think items have the same weighting as far as drop rate goes. It's rng but some items have a heavier weight so they drop more often.

Edited by ghostx78x: 5/10/2016 8:54:25 PMSorry, but you're right. I've played for almost a year and figured this out a long time ago. Bungie controls what drops and how often. Anyone who thinks rewards are random hasn't played the game very much. Enough play time and you can see the patterns plainly.
-
Rewards have literally been broken since day one man.. Not nearly as bad as pre-TTK though. The past exotic engrams that dropped for me were arms. SEVEN in a row.
-
Edited by Ken_Malibu: 5/10/2016 8:29:46 PMYour calculation is way out, it is not 0.5% but 0.04%...... Sorry couldn't resist.
-
The new Reward system responds to low light level areas, for example i wanted longbow and im 333+ everything so I switched my special to a 320 and boom morgue and longbow in a row

Edited by Szeth6678: 5/10/2016 5:02:20 PMI assume part of it is the fact that your chest armour on your Hunter is your lowest piece of gear, and everything else you can possibly get from those packages you already have filled with a piece of 335 gear.
-
Wouldn't it be 9% each time though
-
You said rng gave you things you don't need because year 1 was like that
-
Well to be honest you are wrong all items have a droprate and ofc bad items drop more.
-
Random Number Generator working as intended.
-
Edited by SquidGuy: 5/10/2016 10:43:06 AMIt is weighted for sure. I get boots the majority of the time. I think it has to do with the seed they use to generate randomness.
Nothing in this game or life is actually random.
-
The RNG loot system is broken, there was a time I got four hereafters from engrams in a row....that should be statistically impossible if it were true RNG.
-
Bumpppppppp

Edited by Woodduck098: 5/10/2016 5:40:03 AMProblems: Your data collection is too small to be a proper representation RNG isn't cumulative, it's not like you roll a 6 sided die, get a 4, and are then guaranteed not to get a 4 on the next roll. The odds are always the same. Pros: The RNG system may still actually be biased if armor is more heavily weighted than guns. Example: the six sided die having 2 sides of six.

Then why can I create a program in Java/visual Basic that spits a randomly generated number?
-
It gives the worst players rewards.....its not a coincidence that last place seems to get legendaries etc all the time!
-
You do know that no one said every item has an equal chance to drop right? And even if they did say that, I don't believe it for a damn second without seeing the code.
