Verses 1.0-1.9
On a massive gas giant known as Fundament on an unknown solar system lives a race of small krill people. There are several factions of these krill people that each live on different continents: The Bone Plaza, the Star Cutters, the Helium Drinkers, and the Osmium Court. The King of the Osmium Court has three surviving daughters. (Note: until the krill people take the Knight, Mother, or King morph, they have no gender but are always referred to with feminine pronouns.) The three daughters are Aurash, the curious one and the oldest, Xi Ro, the youngest, who dreams of becoming a Knight, and Sathona, the clever one who wants to become a Mother.
Aurash has just returned from a trip where she has learned that their people are not the natural prey of the world and that all of the continents the krill people reside upon were once parts of a planet that crashed into Fundament and broke apart a long, long time ago. Shortly after the daughters return, the Osmium Court is raided yet again by the Helium Drinkers. Taox, the daughters' teacher and caretaker thinks the Osmium Kingdom is doomed. The Osmium King has gone senile in his old age. (Krill people only live to be ten years only unless they are a Mother without child, which can live much longer.) Instead of doing his kingly duties, the Osmium King wanders the halls of the continent speaking to a dead white worm and raving about the moons and oceans of Fundament. Knowing that the position of King will soon go to one of the daughters, Taox devises a plan for the Helium Drinkers to raid the Osmium Court and kill the King and his daughters, for she sees all three as unfit to rule. The Helium Drinkers invade and murder a lot of krill people, including the Osmium King, but the three daughters escape and pledge revenge against Taox, who has become the Helium Drinkers' regent and is tasked with ruling the Osmium Court.
As the sisters explore, looking to find a way to survive and enact their revenge, Aurash vows it understand her late father's deepest fear: the fear of a syzygy, the aligning of all of Fundament's moons. If enough of the moons aligned the combined gravity would be enough to lift a massive bulge of the gas giant's seas. When the moons passed, the bulge would fall, creating a massive wave that would travel across the whole planet, exterminating all life on it. Eventually Sathona leads the three to a needle ship, a ship meant to dive down into the depths of Fundament's vast ocean. She knows these things because they have been told to her by her father's familiar, the dead white worn, which she snagged from her father's body as they fled. The worm is dead, but it still speaks to her mind.
It takes two years, but the sisters finally repair the ship enough to dive. As they are diving, they encounter the Leviathan, a massive creature, who warns then to turn back at all costs or else all of the universe is doomed. The massive creature explains that there are two fundamental forces of the universe: the Deep and the Sky. The Sky wants all life to have a perfect and equal existence, whereas the Deep believes that only the strongest deserve to survive. The Leviathan is a servant of the Sky and explains that it is the Deep that is calling them to the planet's core, and for the sake of the universe they must reject the Deep's call and turn back. The sisters scoff at the ancient creature and continue down to the planet's core, much to the dismay and horror of the Leviathan.
When they reach the planet's core, the sisters discover a vast power: the Worm Gods Eir, Yul, Ur, Xol, and Akka. (The Worm Gods resemble wyrms (dragon-like creatures) more than they resemble actual worms.) They explain that they have been trapped at Fundament's core for millions of year waiting for a species to come down to meet them. Then they make a bargain with the three sisters. If they accept one of the worm larvae into themselves, they can obtain eternal life and amazing power. But, this deal comes at a price. One: they must serve the Deep and its philosophy. Two: they must always obey their nature (Aurash's curiosity, Xi Ro' strength, and Sathona's cunning), or else their worms will eat their very being, ending them forever. The more power they gain, the hungrier their worm will become. The worm will always grow hungrier, but this hunger can never be filled. This ensures that the sisters must always obey their nature and grow more powerful, or else they are not fit to exist and their worm will devour them. The sisters agree to the bargain and take their adult forms. Xi Ro takes the Knight morph and becomes Xivu Arath. Sathona takes the Mother morph (also known as a Wizard) and becomes Savathûn. And Aurash takes the King morph and becomes Auryx.

Pretty sure the king morph is always male, since Aurash speaks of her father. This is why she changes to he once pronouncing himself king.

A great read, thanks!

Thanks for summarizing the books of sorrow. It makes it so much easier to grasp. :)
