The Etiquette of the Heavy Ammo Crate (Refresher Course)

It's Iron Banner again, which means that once again, people who don't normally play PvP are trying to remember how. This also means- yes, you guessed it- someone is on the forum telling them that they're opening the heavy ammo crates too soon. There's a certain etiquette involved in opening the crate when you're on a team. If you're the only one at the crate, and there's no red on your radar, DON'T OPEN THE DAMN CRATE. I can't put it more clearly than that. Wait for the rest of your team so they get some heavy ammo as well. Obviously, it's a judgement call sometimes. There may be a red line at the edge of your screen... in that case, is your team closer than the enemy? Can you wait for them? Or do you have an enemy bearing down on you, lusting for your chitlins, so that you have to pop the crate or risk losing it to the other team? But other times, there's no judgement to be made. It's a clear case of seeing that half of your team is still converging on the crate, knowing that the enemy is nowhere in sight, and just not caring. Yes, there's an announcement when heavy ammo is inbound. But on many maps, that's still not a lot of time to get to the crate from wherever one happens to be, especially since there's actual fighting taking place. Not everyone arranges their game around the drop timer. Sometimes it's just bad luck. Whatever the case, delaying a second or two is not going to cost you the game, and having a few more players with heavy ammo might actually affect the outcome. Many a loss has turned into a win, and vice-versa, based on some heavy kills at the right time. Think about it next time you're tempted to open that crate all by yourself.

Quick helpful tips based on my experiences. Your mileage may vary: - Don't delay if your exposed like outside heavy on Black Shield. If you see red on your radar, pick up the heavy. Even if you don't see any red on your radar and your teammates aren't near you, pick it up and book it to cover. Why you ask? Take a gander at my "Word to the Wise." - If you see your teammates running towards you and you see an enemy taking aim with a super or their own rockets, just pick it up and hope that the closest teammate got the heavy as well. Nothing like pushing your luck only to get rekt and teabagged by the other team. - If you see that your teammates picked up the other heavy, pick up the one you are at ASAP. Don't wait. Don't diddle around. Just pick it up. Don't give even a small chance for the other team to get heavy period. Let their tears and depression from not getting heavy ammo fuel your determination to use your newly acquired one on them. - If you don't see red on radar or any teammates at all, use your discretion. If your exposed, you honestly should just pick it up and book it but if your in a spot that you believe you can honestly hold down like say, the inside heavy spawn in Black Shield, then you could wait for your teammates if you want to. It's up to you. You probably should though. Just saying. - Word to the wise, there are many, many snipers nowadays so you might not see them on your radar. Be diligent in knowing your surroundings and checking those sniper lanes. Nothing like running towards my teammates at a heavy spawn only to see they're getting picked one by one and seeing an ever so nimble enemy combatant grabbing the heavy. With every person that this helps out, I will donate a piece of a random wood chip procured at no expense from my local lumber yard to my fire pit, =).
