The Internet is outraged because a white actor was cast as one of the most iconic Japanese roles, Major from Ghost in the Shell, an anime movie that has had a big impact on modern sci fi.

I'm for it because the character in the anime is white, Japanese or not a white actor should play the role
-
I. Don't. Care.
-
Who cares? The movie is just going to suck like Dragonball Z and The Last Airbender.
-
There's no way this movie will be any good. I think she's fine for the part but there's no way a Hollywood movie will get across any of the main themes
-
Yea, maybe people would have a right to be upset if the anime character actually looked Asian...
-
Edited by Infiltrat0rN7: 4/26/2016 7:06:55 AMThey just shouldn't use Scarlet Johansson for the Major, she's a meh tier actor and the need a Stronk independent women Also, GiTS straight up takes place in Japan, so it makes sense to have a Asian actor
-
They are going to -blam!- it up I love scarlet but I can't bear to watch as my number 1 anime becomes a trashy live action. 😢😢😢😢😢😢
-
Let's just hope they don't whitewash the spidertanks. The real risk I see is a bunch of hillbilly murican robots shooting anything that moves.
-
I've always preferred staying as close to the source material as possible. However, I'm assuming this is an adaptation from anime to a live action film, in which case I've always thought the characters could go anyway because from what I've seen of anime, the characters always seem to be a mix of Asians and white people. In which case, I don't really care.
-
If it's Hermione, than sure, because she started as a book character who could be adapted to any race. That's actually a pretty cool concept, that no two hermiones are exactly alike. For this, well, it's dumb. Plenty of good Asian actors out there, the character started out as Asian, IIRC, and i don't see a need to change it. Same for white characters played by other racial actors.
-
I've Been telling people about this for months 1. The forest... Some ppl complain but I thought nothing of it 2. Gods of Egypt... Some complain and I didn't say any anything but they had a fair point. 3. GITS (oh HELLLLL NO)
-
So basically this article implies that the races should only play the races they are suppose to. Guess all the japanese anime portrayals of white people should be removed.
-
Well I'm fine with it. It's a Hollywood movie, made for an American audience. Would you be upset if the Japanese made Othello with all Japanese actors? Even though Othello is black? I wouldn't care and I doubt the Japanese would care either. In other words get over it.

OR. Bungie could stop being lazy and add a choice for players to choose their ghost's voice
-
Edited by dadwithapad: 4/25/2016 7:18:38 PMScarlett Johansson should be in all the films. Then I'll die a happy but exhausted man.

People adapting a character to take on a more "local" flavor? I'm just going to leave this here...
In all honesty though, I'm on the fence about this. I can definitely see Rinko Kikuchi as Major Kusanagi, but the voice would be a bit soft, which could be a bit offsetting from her somewhat cold demeanor. Scarlett Johansson has a deeper, more mature sounding voice which may better suit the character. Also, while we cry whitewashing and racebending, it's been proven that using a good actor can trump strict adherence to the source material. Iris Elba's Heimdall is an example of this, as is the fact that there are many people out there (myself included) who think he'd make a great Bond. A few other notable examples: Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury (various Marvel franchises) Morgan Freeman as Red (Shawshank Redemption) Ben Affleck as Tony Mendez (Argo) So, while I do feel they should have cast someone of Japanese descent, I won't write off the movie on that point alone. Who knows, maybe it will end up like Edge of Tomorrow or Snowpiercer and notably differentiate itself from the source material.
I don't think she looks the part. Doesn't necessarily have to be an Asian actor, Just one that looks more the part.
-
Edited by Leo687: 4/25/2016 6:17:49 PMTo be fair while the source material is Japanese the character doesn't exactly 'look' Asian......if it was a white guy being caste in a black guys place sure that's whitewashing. But in this case it's less of an argument.
-
I don't understand why people are upset... It's just a movie. No one freaked out about Samuel L. Jackson being Nick Fury
-
Put some respekk on it

Never seen it before....

-blam!-in' magnets, how do they work?
-
It's Hollywood, they care more about appealing to the masses than catering to the audience it was directed towards. As a huge fan of Ghost in the Shell, I'm not looking forward to this adaptation, mainly because of how much Hollywood like to westernize and censor things.

Your poll is missing an "I couldn't give a -blam!-." option.
