Seems a bit sexist...

  • This isn't exactly an original post on this thread, but since we're here... there are a couple of definitions people like to throw around about sexism. The definition I find more appropriate is the sociological one in which sexism is defined as discrimination by the dominant sex (men) against the subordinate sex (women), or to put it another way sexism = prejudice against women + institutional power to enforce the prejudice. As women do not have institutional power in our or most societies, while we can be prejudiced, we cannot be sexist. The other common definition is an OED-type that usually says something along the lines of sexism is discrimination against people on the basis of sex. Even if you accept this definition, and to be clear, I don't as it's woefully inadequate, in order to for us discriminate against men, men must have some inherent right to join our clan that we are taking away. That does not exist in this instance, as we are a private group with every right to set our own admission criteria. You might have some slim argument in these instances: 1. If we tried to force members to only game with other members, only be a part of our group, or only be friends with other women. We don't do any of these things - in addition to being ridiculous, it would be taking away the rights clearly outlined in the Code of Conduct and other guidelines for multiple group membership, etc. 2. If we promoted some sort of hatred or intolerance toward men. We also do not do that. While I'm sure out of our over 1,300 members, there has to be at least one person who is only friends with women, that would be the rare case, and certainly not as a result of anything we promote. What we are trying to do is provide a space for women to feel comfortable and meet other women. We really don't have the time or care to concern ourselves with men (worrying about them, griping about them, tearing them down, etc.) - it's not something we're interested in as we're too busy playing a video game. 3. If we had some stated beef with other exclusivity based clans, like all-male clans, nationality-based clans, age-based clans, etc., and we were actively trying to undermine or attack them. We don't have any problem with those either, and we don't attack other groups' missions. We respect their right to set their own admission criteria and don't feel like we have to be a part of every single space in Destiny. In summary, we're just trying to game here, and we like the opportunity to meet other women who share that interest. Neither that, nor the concept of an all-female space, is sexist.

  • I wasn't being that serious lol. Game on. I just don't like double standards. Seeing this made me think what would happen if there was a male only clan.

  • I ran a poll on that very question once.Turns out nobody would care. Everyone just assumes an all male clan would cause an uproar, but no one has tried it so how would you know for sure? There is no double standard when it comes to gender-based clans. It's all in your head.

Addressed in point 3 above. Thanks for the bumps!

  • Read a few pages into the thread, look back at your opening, and it might become clear to you. If you wanted a conversation about double standards, ask about double standards. If you want to make a joke, state clearly it's a joke in the first place - it's not like we have tone, a shared history, or some other context to otherwise clearly communicate that kind of statement is a joke - and maybe used a term that's a little less loaded to do so. Trying to claim jokes after you've gotten called out and trying to make this my issue is weak sauce.

  • Yeah! Like a mild taco bell sauce! Lol! I gotta say, I like the way you handle things here. Well educated responses are a breath of fresh air on forums after seeing many people just rage out on someone. :)

  • Thanks for the support! I don't see the point in just spewing rage at someone - I've never seen that actually change someone's perspective. Hopefully this approach at least puts some better food for thought out there. Thanks again!

  • People are so easily offended lol. While your retort may be long and filled with flashy words it's hardly an insult. I was browsing the forums, posted some crap out of boredom and you felt the need to write a narrative telling me why I'm wrong. While I can appreciate someone on these forums trying to have an intellectual argument I don't see why everyone is always so defensive and offended.

  • I just wish more people would be positive and leave a bump instead of faux or actual grumpiness.
