Anyone who has A) played Destiny and B) can aim will know that the Fallen, upon cranial expiration, will explode in a shower of a substance called "Ether". They are decidedly addicted to this substance, using Servitors to collect energy and even cannibalise the dead in order to create it. This flammable, addictive, pale, and (according to the Grimoire) pungent liquid also, supposedly, keeps the Fallen alive and grants them both the blessing of strength and the curse of their feral nature.
My theory is this; that Destiny's "Ether" is a version of a real chemical; Diethyl Ether.
Let's start with the most visible quality of Ether; flammability and explosiveness. Diethyl reacts explosively with chemicals in the air at high temperatures, the kind that might be provided by a headshot. This raises the question of why the Fallen aren't just exploding randomly, but I'll talk about this later.
About its appearance, Diethyl is a colourless liquid under most circumstances which matches the pale Ether blood often left by dead Fallen. Another, lesser, point would be the powerful, sweet scent also left by Diethyl, something echoed by Varik's' scenes in the Grimoire where Ether fills the air.
Which brings me onto the seemingly unexplainable addictivity and strength-enhancing abilities of Ether... Or are they? Ether-addiction in real-life exists; etheromania, a condition often associated with the drinking or INHALATION of ether. The Fallen do this through their masks, and given Diethyl's solvent nature, it might well help to serve as blood for the Fallen. Ether being Diethyl also explains how Servitors even produce the stuff; it's just carbon, oxygen and hydrogen reacted together, gathered, often from corpses, and then combined with energy from elsewhere.
As for the strength, size and resistance it offers, while the former two are hard to pin down in a sci-fi so filled with space magic and wizardry, the latter is easy; Diethyl Ether is a narcotic, an anaesthetic, the Fallen don't feel much pain because the Ether softens it. Going back to why the Fallen aren't just exploding everywhere, they likely, as a species closely related to insects, have cold blood and a cool internal body temperature.
So, at the end of the day, the Fallen aren't space pirates surviving on magic and plunder, they're just junkies looking for their next huff of Diethyl Ether.

Ether is not the white stuff coming out of headshots. It's orange, the stuff on skolas' helmet, that is ether. Ether makes fallen stronger, and gives them an extra set of arms. It would sort of be like steroids with no work.

"The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon. "

Actually it's been stated by one of the devs that what you see when you headshot a Fallen, is their soul escaping

I don't like the name eliksni Really sounds like destiny is trying to be halo

I thought it was a synthetic form of Light created after the Traveler left the Eliksni. [][][]

Edited by Mavsy 81: 4/23/2016 2:37:40 AMIt's synthetic light, created by the Servitors, the Eliksni version of ghosts. The traveller abandoned the Eliksni when the darkness came to their solar system or galaxy. When it left they lost their connection to the light and their civilisation crumbled, they then became the fallen. It makes them more powerful but is not equal to the travellers light and has adverse effects.

I'm curious how the blighted ether is different to normal and what it could do What if a dreg took some of the tainted ether
-
Well, not exactly. Ether is visible - it is the purple substance that comes out of their servitors, and is synthesized by the Servitors from energy and matter. This leads me to believe that Ether is a form of glimmer, a transmutable form of matter used by tower foundries. Certainly, they are formed by a similar process; glimmer is matter that can be transformed into anything, whereas ether can be made out of any form of matter and energy. My theory is that Ether was a substance that formed naturally on the Fallen homeworld, and was commonplace in their foods. However, once they were forced to flee their homeworld during the Whirlwind, their servitors became the sole providers of Ether. In addition, Ether is not simply a drug. The more ether a Fallen consumes, the more it grows. This means that dregs are given the least amount of Ether, whereas the Kell receives the largest rations. In addition, if a Fallen goes without ether for to long, they basically die from a process similar to starvation.

That ether.....Is their sperm. ~TheOkayNike

I've given variks well over a thousand ether seeds for heavy synths. I was just feeding that bastards addiction.
-
I guess you could say that the Fallen... ARCHON drugs!
-
But don't fallen get much bigger with more ether they consume?
-
I thought the white vapour that appears when you head shot them was their souls being torn from their body.
-
MatPat... Is that you?

From what I think "ether" is. Since the Fallen once had the traveler on their side and they had great power. I think that "ether" is the Fallen's substitute for 'light'. The servitors are machines made by the fallen before the traveler left them, these servitors could strengthen our guardian's with light (Fallen call it 'ether') if their programming allowed it.

Ether way Bungie will never tell us.

So wait.....you mean to tell me that ether is......ether???? Whoa.....mind blown.

But why don't they explode if you light them on fire?
