What is the future of data storage? DNA.
A team at the University of Washington has just moved DNA data storage forward a significant step by making the data stored in DNA both searchable and directly accessible. They encoded four digital images in DNA, and then retrieved them perfectly.
In 2012, Harvard researchers demonstrated that 5.5 petabits (5,500 terabits) of data can be stored in a single cubic millimetre of DNA. In 2013, researchers from the European Bioinformatics Institute demonstrated that the data could then be retrieved by sequencing the DNA.
To store data as DNA, the binary code needs to be converted into the four nucleotides that make up DNA. DNA is then synthesised with the data encoded. Replicating this DNA is a relatively easy process, which is how Technicolor stored one million copies of the same film in a small vial of DNA.
As this becomes more cost effective and efficient with fewer errors this will become more and more practical.
It also kind of begins blending the line between what is machine and what isn't as our ability to manipulate biological matter advances.
All interesting stuff, discuss.

We're aliens

Can I plug my d!ck into a computer?
-
Just imagine how cool it will be in 50 years to jizz into your computer and see what kind of crazy data comes out.
-
Now if you'll just give me a moment and I'll have this PowerPoint up and running. Just need to insert my floppy dick.
-
Could my penis store AC/DC songs?
-
we can make solid state selenium crystal storage drives right now actually which is kinda way less maintenance required/more efficient

Science rules.

If we learned anything from halo 4, this is a bad idea.
-
Where do you find this stuff?
-
I don't like science's advances it some areas like this... It just makes me feel uncomfortable with what we can accomplish. I'm not saying to stifle it or anything, but... I don't know, I just don't like it.

Sounds like Assassins creed.

This sounds like SOMA

Edited by ~wolfBTM~: 4/11/2016 1:56:30 PMThe problem with this is that, even though it can store a massive amount of data, the data retrieval would be relatively slow. Edit: Never mind, they seem to be making advances in that area with "random access" rather than entire sequencing... This is rather exciting.

Wouldn't the reading and writing of this data be a painfully slow process?
-
So the next time I build a PC will I have to put a small mammal inside of it instead of a hard drive?
-
What would happen if we took the storage-DNA and attempted to use it to clone a lamb or something?
-
Think this'll eventually evolve into something like directly feeding our brain with information?
-
Hold on lemme just rip out some flesh and get my PowerPoint presentation.
-
Does this mean we'll all get extra chromosomes?
-
So I finally have a place to hide all my porn.

Yhea saw that the other day. I was sure it was possible one day but seems a bit early.
-
Meh , means bugger all to me .
-
Blood hard drives?

I nominate Britton for presidents.

So how much data would a baby contain? The only accurate way to find out is to blend it.
-
It's all organic, it's just more of the fact that it happens through an artificial process... No need to worry about robot-humanoid hybrids yet!
