I doubt people get paid for discovering planets.
You'd possibly get a Nobel prize though if your discovery was important enough, which may lead you to get a research scholarship with some institute or university somewhere.

Makes sense. Must be pretty boring though considering you've got to spend months fixed on one little part of space.
