The True darkness is coming guardians.

This will be a relatively short theory, some people have done something like this before before but this is my take on it. You thought oryx or the vex were true darkness? The vex were easily taken by Oryx. Therefore Oryx is the darker of the darkness. But there's a little line of dialogue from so far back that we all may have forgotten.
"The hive have seen thousands of worlds taken by the darkness"
One would think that to just be Oryx at first glace but it seems carefully worded to drive away from that. The hive watched the darkness take worlds. As in the hive watched a separated entity (the darkness) consume worlds. What does this mean? There's something else out there, with unknown intentions and an unknown form. We do know things about them though. They really like gardens. Card>Allies>Rasputin>Ghost fragment: Rasputin 4:
And you are not one of IT [the flower eater, the queen of final shapes, that which also inhabits its petitioners]
The Queen of final shapes? This is the darkness, but it would seem it may have "relations" with the hive. They also may be the creators of the black garden itself. Card>enemies>The Taken>The Taken:
Oryx wields this power. But Oryx did not make it. We face the same flower we met in the black garden.
So we know the black heart wasn't created by Oryx and it wasn't created by the vex but it's power is similar to that of the taken power. The darkness may be very like the taken but with their own shape. Another distinguishing feature of the darkness is it's fondness of gardens. The vex have no need for a garden so it's more likely the darkness created the garden with the black heart and it also seems it may have a certain "blind spot" with gardens. Card>Activities>Crucible arenas>Crossroads:
A hidden report to Ikora mentioned, "they[the vex] clove this ruin out of the land, possibly to defend themselves from a long-vanished enemy, or perhaps to isolate the land for experimentation.
This may have been how the vex hid themselves from the darkness when it attacked. Maybe the darkness overlooked this kind of area? But according to Rasputin IT ate "flowers". Maybe flowers of it's own origin. When he refers to it eating the flowers I can only assume he means mercury as it was a garden world. It attacked that garden because it wasn't a garden IT made. I guess you could consider the darkness's garden as a sort of check point system, so it can tell where it's been and where it hasn't. A calling card if you will. To sum up. We know the darkness is a separate entity that has similar power to the taken but doesn't bow to Oryx's will, and it "likes gardens". It's very powerful and may be lead by the "queen of shapes". The traveler must have fought it back and put it in a place where it had to recover, but at a cost. Extra little bit:
This is going on a limb and likely isn't right but the darkness might be cephalopods....Why do I say this? Phanin mentions his love of cephalopods numerous times in our gear. Because he was in the vault of glass, maybe he saw a vision of the darkness. He also mention about how he "looks up" when he enters a room because he doesn't want to"get his head bitten off". IDK, maybe Pahanin was just outright crazy but I feel like it's worth a mention.
So what do you think? anything I'm missing, Anything you think makes more sense? I'll make an extended theory if I get anything substantial. edit list:
Big edit: I wanted to come back and re-work this theory with the new things I've learned in the lore (as it has been a long while since I first made this.)

Back to master thread: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/205238605?showBanned=0&path=0
Cheers. :D

  • Rasputin refers to the traveller as the "Gardner," so 'flower-eater," is an appropriate reference to the darkness.

  • Hmm. Maybe No. The first is us. The second is the hive. The third is the vex. Read that way it makes a lot more sense.

    • I think it's plausible that the ahkamara will be involved in the next bit of the destiny story, in the books of sorrow it says that Auryx, oryx, overcame Akka, presumably an ahakamara, through the sword logic. He killed his two sisters which fed his worm and made him much stronger. Now that Oryx is dead I think that the ahakamara will rise again wanting to destroy the hive

I’m going to put my response here because this theory I have is too bizarre and unsubstantiated for me to put in a post of its own, but your last spoiler about cephalopods surprised me because I quite literally was thinking about them as it relates to this game. Crazy coincidence so I’ll put my crazy thoughts down here… Year one, I theorized that the darkness was space worms (before the Book of Sorrows). I was mostly wrong, but at least made some connections between the worms in the hive and its ties to the darkness. So now there is a second theme I’ve started wondering about: cephalopods. My short answer, is I think they are the Vex, and it could relate to their origin (much like the worms related to the hive origin) Pahanin, one of the members of Kabr’s team that entered the VoG, is obsessed with cephalopods. He has two hunter cloaks called “Squid Pro Quo” and “Octopus Cloak”. Both those being cephalopods, a type of marine animal. The description of that gear is “Yes, my love for cephalopods is well documented” and “If human extinction seems imminent, try to relax. You’re just giving the cephalopods a chance.” So we have Pahanin obsessed with cephalopods, which are marine animals. Now to the Vex. The actual organic part of the vex (the actual vex, not the metal shell), is the milky fluid in their torso (the white crit spot we all love shooting). Grimoire calls it “radiolarian” fluid. Radiolarian also being marine animals, single celled organisms with a bony skeleton. I think there is a connection there. Now onto the bizarre. There is another reference to cephalopods in Grimoire, the Ammonites in the book of sorrows, who are a marine based species described as “bony six armed cephalopods”. The Ammonites also just happen to be the first documented (at least to date) species to have had the traveler. *Puts tin foil hat on*. What if the milky vex fluid, is based on the Ammonites? The same fluid in the Vex being the same cellular material of the Ammonites? I mean, we humans created Exos (machine versions of ourselves) to put our minds in. What if in an attempt to avoid extinction by the hive, the Ammonites put their cellular information in machine body, aka the Vex? I don’t think that is quite the answer, but I am willing to bet that like the subtle year one “worm” clues were hints at the future story arc regarding the Worm gods, that the cephalopods will have some future role in the story. There is something there I bet.

        • The darkness is absolutely a different entity than the hive/vex. The hive are servants of the darkness (aka the deep). Easiest reference is in the book of sorrows (and there are plenty more), at the end of the partition of death card: But while Oryx travelled to observe the Deep destroy an ancient fortress world.." That alone shows a distinction between Oryx and the Deep/darkness
