I just very recently got Destiny for the Xbox 360. I know I'm way late, but to no surprise, the community is still very active and I find Crucible matches very fast, contrary to popular lies. No, Destiny is not dying, and it won't be any time soon. Now, back to what I was saying. I've been interested in Destiny since it's announcement, but I tried not to keep up with the times as I'd spoil myself of the story and what not. Well, unlike what many people say (only because they crave the need to give Destiny a bad rep, for some reason), Destiny has GREAT lore! The people who bash its story are the same people who play CoD for the story. I won't say whether or not CoD has a good story, mainly because I don't play the campaigns, but I do know that it is a typical in-your-face story type of shooter that tells its story through many cutscenes and straightforwardness. They expect everything to be given to them, rather than earn it themselves. I, however, am a Dark Souls fan, and I was very, very pleased to find out that Destiny, at least part of it, was inspired by Dark Souls. I will admit that Bungie got pretty lazy with some of the Grimoire cards, but aside from those cards, they're awesome as a whole. Aside from that though, there's a lot of story to be found by just reading dialogue, which I guarantee most of the people who bash Destiny's story don't read. And you have to remember, Destiny has a TEN YEAR plan! If they released all of the story in year one or two, that would make a lot of people mad and probably bored. You have to look at the big picture, and the future, and not expect all of the story to be handed to you in hours worth of cutscenes. If you want a movie, go watch a damn movie.
P.S. Sorry for any spelling mistakes or bad English. It's like 80° in here and on top of that I'm tired. Don't feel like going over this whole thing.

Human life is centered around a giant ping pong ball and the Looney tunes characters are trying to destroy it. Great lore

You really don't know how storytelling works do you?
-
Ask me any lore question; I'll get you up to date.

Edited by smokin: 3/10/2016 1:49:49 AMWhat I figured was that the lore was history an the story is happening now somewhat like demon souls/dark souls. That's why so few cut scenes. I've always hated cut scene heavy games. The tower does need a library though.

Destiny has an amazing story and incredible lore. The delivery of that story and lore is sub par at best.
-
Destiny has a story •~• Since when?
-
Destiny has been dying for awhile just very slowly. Occasionally it'd die off quickly with the release of new games but the population of players has not been on the rise. Even if the population stays at like a million or something it'll still be dead cuz it's not growing.
-
The universe bungie built up and the story is actually fantastic. The way bungie has presented it, is pretty terrible.
-
I always love when I buy a new book to read from my favorite author and he gives me the names, then says go read all the history of these people for the story. You can find them online. Is awesome.
-
I'm a casual gamer. I don't want to sift through lore on Bungie's website to speculate and take meaning. Not that into the game. I've done so with other games, but not really this one.
-
lore is not story, lore is basically side story, something that is found or discovered.A story should develop as the game goes on but lore shouldn't be needed to have the story be finished or make sense
-
The problem isn't the story itself, it's the way Bungie presented it
-
The big issue is that there was this whole epic story lined up but they scrapped it and laid the game out as if it happened after the fact. Thats whats shitty, we had an amazing story!! But it got ripped to shreds and the remains got put into grimoire, with the game as it is now in a sort of endless, storyless limbo. The shit in the grimoire seems like it would be WAAAY more fun to play through than the shit we play through now
-
You don't understand the feeling almost every player had when we beat the black garden and said that's it???? Where's the rest Grimore cards don't make up for the obvious lacking story telling
-
The story should have been part of the gameplay. More explanation in cutscenes etc.
-
Even if the lore is good, I don't feel like reading all of that. I want to experience it in game. Destiny's implementation of a story is like a book with no pictures.
-
The story is trash, and there is little to defend it. Is there rich Grimoire/Lore? Sure, but it means very little to me if not even a portion of it is conveyed in game.
-
Destiny has a great lore behind it, but the story told in the game is lackluster. It's almost consensus that the lore is great, but everyone agrees that the story told in vanilla destiny, dark below, and house of wolves has been "meh" at best. Taken king is a different case, as they opted for more traditional story telling elements (cutscenes, dialogue, and exposition).

Edited by Pheonix4545: 3/9/2016 4:03:50 PMLore is not story. I get that they have this magical ten year plan that means they can't have all the story up front, but that doesn't change the fact that the story they have is pathetic, even with the Taken King, and makes the Grimiore feel like a lazy attempt at adding intrigue where there is none. I've read the Grimiore multiple times and pieced it together, but came out disappointed. I assumed the Lore could actually make me care about what I was doing. That would have made it slightly forgivable, if the in-game story was bare-bones, but the Lore was interesting enough to keep me compelled. But, unfortunately, the Lore was just Bungie trying to be mysterious and deep and just coming off as pretentious and lazy. They fail to grasp that you can't fuel a story on intrigue alone, there has to be some substance to it, and more importantly, a reason for the player to give a shit what happens. Neither of these are present. Instead, we get a bunch of half-completed plot threads that hype up unthreatening bosses and the promise that maybe one of these DLCs will tie it all together and actually be interesting. It's pathetic, lazy, and serves as nothing more than a way to hook curious people into buying the DLCs. Tl;Dr The Lore is a bunch of half-completed plot points mashed together to make you want to buy the DLC. 2/10 wouldn't bang.

The game's story was also cut up and scrapped and reorganized months before release
-
Have you heard of the black garden?
you are asked this with no prior mention of it.
We've heard the legends...
no, we haven't, that part of the story got cut from the game. Just like Dinklebot was cut out of TTK.
Destiny has a great story and lore. It's just that very little of it is actually relayed to the player in game. All the vendors and vanguard dudes need to have Mass Effect style conversation wheels. The higher your Vanguard rank, the more conversation topics you could have. Imagine getting to rank 13 with the vanguard and having a long ass conversation with Cayde about some of his adventures that are described in the Grimoire. The NPCs all need personalities outside of minute long cutscenes. The Grimoire should be relayed to players through clever conversations.

Edited by joey big guns: 3/9/2016 10:43:18 PMHere's the thing that has annoyed me from the beginning. If I want to read about the games story I have to somewhere else to read it. That! is the problem. Sure there's a story if I want to go read it, but I didn't buy a video game to go read a book about it somewhere else.

Edited by SpaceMarine8584: 3/9/2016 10:39:00 PMDestiny has a story? Where? Can't find it in game. The speaker doesn't even elaborate.

Edited by ja_ramirez: 3/9/2016 10:08:31 PMLook I get it. It has a huge story. But one little detail IS NOT IN THE GAME. It might be on the guns and whatsoever. But does it really matter? Either way you are going to end up deleting EVERYTHING because there is no vault space. And don't tell me about the glimor cards. The story has to be telled in the game, not playing and then getting off the game and go to a computer and vice versa. Edit: and for the record I love destiny!

Adventure Time has a better story and it's for young children
