AUTISM as a put-down/JUST STOP
Just stop. Stop using autism as a put-down. As the parent of a daughter on the autism spectrum, its disheartening when ignorant people use it as a term of derision, not just these forums, but in everyday life. People on the spectrum process information in very unique ways, but also exhibit behaviors that typically minded folks may find odd. They can also exhibit uncanny genius--my daughter by age 5 knew world capitals better than most grownups, having an eidetic memory.
Unless you personally know someone affected by autism spectrum disorder (ASD) you don't know jack, & your digs are borne of spiteful indifference. So to all who would continue to do so, there goes your insensitive theory, plummeting out a high-rise window. Autism: different...not worse. **daughter Dylan drops mic/walks offstage**

1 ReplyI see much worse conditions being used as insults much more often, but I realise that autism is more personal to you. I think that people should realise that all serious, medical conditions aren't to be used as insults.

So one the one hand, we have autism as an insult. What about every single other extremely insensitive joke used by people like this? Hitler jokes are [i]still[/i] "top of the line", and it's been roughly 70 years. Gay jokes, women jokes, fat jokes, religion jokes.. to be blunt, your daughter (as you insist) is not special. My sister has full blown sickle cell disease and can barely get by a day in school without some ass making fun of her because she can't run track or stay outside too long in the cold Wisconsin weather. Everyone has a story, and we all run into lesser minded people. Their rudeness may know no bounds, but it lacks imagination. If they rely on actual problems to make fun of people, I'm sure karma will give them a surprise after 9 months of waiting!

It is ridiculous, my little brother is on the autism spectrum as well. Unfortunately though that's the Internet. I just roll with knowing that they'd never say it to my face. Most of the time it's teenagers stroking their e-peens and flexing their internet muscles anyway.
