AUTISM as a put-down/JUST STOP
Just stop. Stop using autism as a put-down. As the parent of a daughter on the autism spectrum, its disheartening when ignorant people use it as a term of derision, not just these forums, but in everyday life. People on the spectrum process information in very unique ways, but also exhibit behaviors that typically minded folks may find odd. They can also exhibit uncanny genius--my daughter by age 5 knew world capitals better than most grownups, having an eidetic memory.
Unless you personally know someone affected by autism spectrum disorder (ASD) you don't know jack, & your digs are borne of spiteful indifference. So to all who would continue to do so, there goes your insensitive theory, plummeting out a high-rise window. Autism: different...not worse. **daughter Dylan drops mic/walks offstage**

15 RepliesYou know, most people's kids aren't autistic, hyperactive, dyslexic, or any other of the fad mental illnesses running rampant among parents at the moment. If your healthcare provider gave you that diagnosis for your child along with a prescription for expensive medication, you would be doing yourself a huge favor by going to get a second opinion from a healthcare professional in a seperate system with no previous knowledge of the initial diagnosis to avoid corporate contamination. Because that's what healthcare is: corporate consumerism. They don't want your kid to be healthy. They want to sell you drugs, either directly to you or via your insurance. Don't question it because i said so; question it because this is your child, and your child deserves better than having to take prescription drugs the rest of his/her life.

As much as my empathy wants to agree with your cause. I don't. I don't think we should just accept people for who they are if their brain does not function normally. This kindof soft everyone is a winner nobody is lesser behavior is bullcaca. If you are different, own it. Life isn't fair, never will be. If I see someone autistic doing something odd, I will laugh if I find it funny. I will bug my eyes out at the awkwardness because I find it awkward. I am not going be avoid being myself, because somebody else thinks I should be. That would be hypocritical! Plus give it a few more years and %80 of the population will be either retarded or autistic. Hell look around the forums and you can already smell it.

It's sad how low people have become nowadays. I teach high school special education (ASD) and I have a boy with Aspergers in my class and I swear his iq is twice as high as mine. Try to ignore all the ignorance in people is all I can suggest. But sorry.
