Just stop. Stop using autism as a put-down. As the parent of a daughter on the autism spectrum, its disheartening when ignorant people use it as a term of derision, not just these forums, but in everyday life. People on the spectrum process information in very unique ways, but also exhibit behaviors that typically minded folks may find odd. They can also exhibit uncanny genius--my daughter by age 5 knew world capitals better than most grownups, having an eidetic memory.
Unless you personally know someone affected by autism spectrum disorder (ASD) you don't know jack, & your digs are borne of spiteful indifference. So to all who would continue to do so, there goes your insensitive theory, plummeting out a high-rise window. Autism: different...not worse. **daughter Dylan drops mic/walks offstage**

your DAUGHTERS name is Dylan? I'm starting to think she Isn't the only one with autism in your family...
-
It's a word, pussy. It's not meant to demean actual Autistic people when it's used as an insult. Please get over it.
-
So, if I personally know someone on the nonfunctional end of the spectrum, it's cool?
-
I'm autistic and although I agree with your sentiment, why can't everyone just get thicker skin? That way, no one gets offended!
-
Op is autistic
-
I am on the autistic spectrum, it's a fun insult. Don't be so butthurt.
-
Autistic is too direct, the proper way to insult is retarded.
-
This post gave me AIDS. It's ok to use that as a putdown... right?

Edited by SWED420: 3/7/2016 10:31:07 PMIs it offensive to blind people to call someone blind who walks into a wall? Is it offensive to deaf people to call someone deaf after calling their name 10 times for a response? Is it offensive to retards to call someone a retard after they shit themselves and eat it?... Ok my bad ;)

Edited by Reggie_Wok: 3/7/2016 11:27:09 PMI'm not advocating the use of autism as an insult or derogatory slur, but you're never going to be able to, and shouldn't be trying to, limit the way people use the word. I get where you're coming from, but it's not really going to do anything. Hell, it will probably just provoke trolls and that sort. The more you try to sensor something, the more people will resist. Freedom of speech is one of our most important rights and shouldn't be limited just because something someone said is offensive. Words only have power and meaning if you give them power and meaning.

It's a joke not a dick don't it take it so hard if you don't like it move on

Considering that everyone here can sit still for hours on end for entertainment, I'd say we all have a touch of the 'tism.

The hell is the theory she referenced?

Or, maybe you could stop being over sensitive. Getting offended by words on the Internet? Seriously? Grow up. I regularly use autism as an insult, because guess what; it is an insult.
-
I have Aspergers and yes, sometimes the term gets bandied about by people who really have no idea what Autism is and just make assumptions based on what they believe Autism is. They're almost 99.9% wrong. Occasionally it's used in a witty way or to poke gentle fun at our obsessive nature or our strange quirks. I read far worse on here than that.
-
How about you and everyone else just stop being so damn sensitive? Sure it's a shame that people use Mental impairment as an insult degrading the hardships that those with said mental impairment go through no fault of their own are afflicted with. But on the other hand it's a perfectly apt insult that fits the bill if your goal is to insult someone by association like say comparing a really stupid individual to a legitimately retarded one or a individual with poor eyesight to a legitimately blind one Furthermore the knee-jerk sensitive reaction achieves nothing but changes the semantics like when retarded became "special" because the word retarded was considered insulting and degrading to those legitimately retarded yet "special" was later adapted as an insult as it has the same meaning. All your pointless bitching is just that pointless bitching, because people are cruel, callous and clever. Autistic seems to be the flavor of the month synonym which is ironic because while many autists lack cognitive ability in some areas like socializing they are often more technically gifted then there normal counterparts however comparing an unruly awkward anal individual to an autist is again an apt insult.

I agree I have many good autistic friends who are a joy to be with.
-
In your great crusade to stop the use of the word Autism, I just got it. So thanks for that.
-
You're triggering my extra chromosomes.
-
Fair enough, I will stop using that word.
