Just stop. Stop using autism as a put-down. As the parent of a daughter on the autism spectrum, its disheartening when ignorant people use it as a term of derision, not just these forums, but in everyday life. People on the spectrum process information in very unique ways, but also exhibit behaviors that typically minded folks may find odd. They can also exhibit uncanny genius--my daughter by age 5 knew world capitals better than most grownups, having an eidetic memory.
Unless you personally know someone affected by autism spectrum disorder (ASD) you don't know jack, & your digs are borne of spiteful indifference. So to all who would continue to do so, there goes your insensitive theory, plummeting out a high-rise window. Autism: different...not worse. **daughter Dylan drops mic/walks offstage**

Edited by Decimator Omega: 3/7/2016 11:12:09 PMI myself have autism, but I don't let this bother me. It used to at first, but I managed to grow thicker skin towards it. The way I see it, its the internet and it shouldn't be taken seriously. Mine is also high functioning so I'm probably on the same if not similar spectrum as your child. Growing up I've had people call me retarded in a derogatory context, and there was no severe punishment for it in school. It taught me that I need to have thicker skin and not allow a childish insult get in the way of what really matters. Even if the word autism heads towards this direction, its just people being ignorant. I mean, look at the word gay. That's even used in derogatory context, For instance, if I call a plant gay or say that plant looks really gay, does that really mean the plant is happy or homosexual? No. Its being used out of its original context. And how can an in inanimate object look homosexual or be happy? It makes no sense. My point is, the internet mixes autism with down syndrome, which is a completely separate disorder, and that has also fallen into the insult category on forums unfortunately. My advice to you OP is let people remain ignorant or stupid. You would just be wasting your time trying to educate them, and don't take them seriously. I don't think most people here have any real ill hatred like that, and if they do, then they are losers, and you shouldn't waste your time with losers. /thread

My school accepts anyone and I'm friends with a number of special needs kids, my best friend out of them has autism but on no way is he dumb, I look up to him in so many ways, the poor kid has gotten used by other kids by making him do rude things, but the fact that people are making fun of people with Autism makes fun of people with autism and uses it as a term of being stupid makes me sick, their is a special place in hell for those people

Aspie here. I really, really don't care if someone calls someone else autistic. I really don't.

Thank god this got moved to #Offtopic. #Destiny is toxic enough as it is.

It's like trying to stop people from saying the n word. They'll only stop if they want to, all you can do is ask and hope for the best.

Edited by FirstGreyWolf11: 3/8/2016 5:29:31 PMAs someone who lands rather firmly in your spectrum I would like to say
Quit your bitching
I see nothing wrong with it yes it may hurt your feelings and make you sad but who're you to decide what's right and what isn't?
-
You heard it here first folks. If you don't know somebody affected by ADS then all research you do is completely irrelevant and false.
-
Agree. Sexual orientation also needs to stop being used that way. As for wishing cancer on people, ugh! Makes me hope karma exists. These forums can be pretty toxic, can't help but feel it has to do with the education and upbringing of today's youth. Sad thought.

Reality is my favorite character. But seriously, grow a thicker skin. People are mean. You complaining on the internet is nothing but autistic.

Edited by ttv/RitzyCheese: 3/8/2016 5:51:54 AMPeople are too sensitive. I think it's completely wrong to make fun of someone (who you aren't friends with) for things they can't help. Calling black people "niggers" in a serious and negative context or making fun of retarded people for being retarded is obviously a horrible thing to do. That being said, people shouldn't be crucified for using these words in different contexts. Making jokes, referring to the words, and using them colloquially should not be frowned upon. For example, saying something is "retarded" or "gay" does not mean that you are using these words as slurs. It's just slang. People need to learn what context is.
bonus points to my argument if this post gets removed for using words like niggers and retarded
You know this is the internet right? Your opinion doesn't really matter, and typing a 3 paragraph post isn't going to do much. Those 3 paragraphs aren't going to change people's minds overnight.
-
Can you add retard too. The accepted term is mentally handicapped! Too many people disrespect, I have a mentally handicapped family member and it's the equivalent to calling a black guy the "N" word, or whatever ethnicity discrimination. So just get smart people come on.

I have been waiting for a logic filled post such as this. And it's good that I finally found one. Good job :)

Personally, as a person who has a family member who was diagnosed with Autism, I take a lot of offense when someone says, "stop being autistic", or using Autism in a derogatory manner. Typically, I notice those people who do that are either between the ages of 10-15. I was one of those jackasses back when I was 15. A LOT of users on this site fit around that age group, and I notice that this site has a lot of users who use negative connotations towards anyone who has a mental or physical disability, and then they backtrack and say that the people who are offended by that are being too sensitive. This is the only site I frequent that has kids who are so desensitized that blatant disrespect towards people with mental disabilities and physical disabilities is quite commonplace. Not even the League of Legends forums are this bad, and there is a decent amount of people on those forums who are jackasses. It adds even more salt to the wound when they say to grow a pair when they know that they're intentionally being jackasses.

I am sick of Autism being used as an insult!
-
Nicely put. My son is autistic, an I have seen a growing trend of teenagers using it as an insult. I'm pretty quick to inform an nicely shut them down.
-
People like this is the reason this country's going to shit. "Oh no, there's a word i don't like that people I'll never meet are using, wah"
-
Coming from somebody on the spectrum, who cares? You shouldn't expect people you don't know to censor themselves over a problem they don't have.

K cool
