That's pretty impressive on the wood drawing, does the wood gain get in the way, or do you need to plan around it in any way?

As long as it's sanded it works perfect. I use prismacolors so they are really waxy and soft, they fill the pores of the wood easily. Only bad thing is that the wood eats them up quickly. Sometimes I use a water color paint as a base layer and the pencil goes right over it
