I get that they wanted players to use more varied gear, but here's the thing; that mindset is totally for their benefit, not the players'. The initial 2.0 patch that dropped with TTK greatly nerfed all of Y1, by substantially reducing the effectiveness of individual "OP" weapons (like Thorn, or Ghally), as well as nerfing almost every single Y1 perk by around 50-80%, on average. As a result, Y1 weapons are no where near as powerful as they were, and have all balanced to Y2 levels. And, in PvE environments, regardless of how prevalent any particular weapon may be, no one was ever negatively affected by someone else's gear choice, in the first place. In fact, it was probably a net positive, because it typically made fireteams stronger, overall. I understand that the designers want players to experience all the new content AND gear they worked hard to make, and I'm not faulting them for it. But, considering that Y1 was already balanced with Y2, leaving Y1 gear behind is entirely about forcing players to use new stuff for the sake of using new stuff, and does nothing to help players.
