I bought the game during the end of year sale and haven't touched it much since then, but I'm really confused and just lost in general. Just don't know what to do at the start of the game and need some tips on how to get the track rolling.
So far all I've done is built a shelter in the side of a hill. Day doesn't last too long and at night tons of zombies come to my door and they take several hits to kill even one. I'm dying too easily and when I look at the crafting table's inventory I barely see anything that looks helpful besides basic building.

Skip the mining and start fishing!

The tutorial was garbage, I didn't play much cause of it.

Edited by alvin2503: 2/13/2016 9:59:54 AMIt's really hard to get in the game, but once you're in, the game became really big and fun. There's a lot of bosses, crafting stuff, dungeon, biomes, etc.

From what I can gather it's Minecraft without a Z axis but with more stuff if that helps.

Edited by TBoneJake: 2/13/2016 12:34:51 AMConsole or PC? Also, you won't find a lot of the awesome things until you're farther in.

I can help you learn the basics if you want. I'm on XB1 GT: GrinderOfGrunts

You won't discover new things to make until you find items that contribute to making said items. On the point of night, just go mining and not go to the surface.
-
Oh man I remember when people were saying that this could be a Minecraft killer back then...ahh man that was so long ago.

Console or pc terraria? I can help you out from chat, or ingame

Make a Wooden Sword & Wooden Armor. Once you have that, head to the Corruption/Crimson, and cut down as many trees as you can. Use your new Ebonwood/Shadewood to make better armor/sword. Go mining. You can skip making pickaxes, your starter one can serve you well enough. Be sure to keep building houses for NPCs, the entire time! Key items you need; Silver/Tungsten Ore (enough to make a sword, armor, and bow), Gemstones (magic staves), Magic Mirror (chests), Hermes' Boots (chests) Once you have at least the armor (and preferably the boots) you should be good to head to the Jungle. Once there, look for Pirhanas. Kill them until you get a hook. Use iron/lead + hook to make a grappling hook. Once you have a grappling hook, start going out at night. Fight zombies & demon eyes until you decide your playstyle. (Melee, ranged, or magic) If magic, search for Fallen Stars at night, and build the best Gem Staff you can. (Ruby, or Diamond) If melee or ranged, upgrade your silver/tungsten bow/sword to a gold/platinum. Magic; Try to find diamonds, and spider webs, to make a diamond cloak. Ranged; Gold/platinum armor + a gold/platinum bow is the best you can do, right now. Craft jester arrows from stars. Melee; dive into the ice biome and look for ice chests until you find a sword. Or (PC ONLY) you can try searching for an enchanted sword. (found underground, I think) By this time you should have plenty of lenses. Use these at a Demon/Crimson Alter to make Suspicious Looking Eyes. Use them at night to summon the first boss. Melee & Ranged characters can use the ore dropped to make better swords/bow. You then must delve into the corruption/crimson to break crimson hearts/shadow orbs. This will give loot & spawn the boss.

I was the same way, now I have over 100 hours in it and only had it for a month

Did you turn your pc on and off. Did you unplug your router and pc at the same time.
-
Did you turn it off and on

Press buttons till something happens

After house building, go dig better and better ores then when you're really good you dig to the nether and kill a voodoo demon to summon a boss
-
First do the tutorial, that should help. Then try to find a dessert and cut down some cacti to make a better sword, the one they give you is atrocious.

Mine and avoid mobs until building a better sword. Forget about shelter until zombies are easy to kill.
