Why are they just discovering it now?

So blank posts in space?

Physics hype

What exactly do they do besides prove Einstein's theory of relativity?

Here is the conclusion straight from the publication: The LIGO detectors have observed gravitational waves from the merger of two stellar-mass black holes. The detected waveform matches the predictions of general relativity for the inspiral and merger of a pair of black holes and the ringdown of the resulting single black hole. These observations demonstrate the existence of binary stellar-mass black hole systems. This is the first direct detection of gravitational waves and the first observation of a binary black hole merger. Awesome. I remember asking my science teacher 'What happens when two blackholes collide?' say... last year. He said 'we don't know' and now.... we detected a merger. Can't wait to see what they do next and have that question answered a little more...!

I was going to post this, but was away from my computer. :( I thought I'd directly post the publication, even though it's linked in the article. Just for those lazy folks who might want to go straight to the good stuff.

Too bad that's meaningless and doesn't matter for a spec of shit. Now say they discovered something relevant and helpful that would be cool maybe cure something. But no we keep talking about things like this that have no affect on our lives What so ever

It also proves that sound can travel without particles

My first thought, "we all gettin super powers baby!" Then I actually listened to the story and was depressed for the rest of the day.
A supermassive black hole collision that took place 1.3 billion years ago. When it occurred, about three times the mass of the sun was converted to energy in a fraction of a second.
Yipes! Kind of humbles you when you think about that.
