Hey all,
In this weeks update they are releasing freelance. I'm assuming you know all about it so I won't go into detail. They are trying to solve a problem but I believe they are potentially created bigger problems by doing this. Here's why:
Player segregation - separating your players into two groups naturally creates longer queue times. I don't know the statistics of how many players play in fire teams, but expect one of these playlists to have fairly long queues.
Latency - two playlists mean less players to choose from. This means you are less likely to play against players that are more local to you. Expect at least one of these playlists to have more lag/latency issues.
Skill - same as above, you are less likely to find players of the same skill. It sucks playing against fireteams that coordinate, but it also sucks playing against players that are far better than you.
Now what's the best scenario? Players split 50/50 increases all these things minimally. Next best, players ignore the freelance mode and we deal with the issue of fireteams. Worst case, IMO the most likely, most players go to freelance mode making these problems extreme in the normal mode. Basically discouraging players to play together in a cooperative game...
We can hope for the best but this is a bandage to the problem that only seems good in theory. I think the risk is too high for the reward. Let me know what you think.

So an update to this post and some of the points made. I have played both freelance playlists and for the most part connections seemed decent no glaring issues. However one of the BIGGEST issues is the fact that people quit out. More specifically in 3v3 freelance. That shit is so dum and frustrating, if you're loosing 5 mins or so in one person leaves...then another leaves and you're by yourself against 3 players. Not cool and not okay. Hopefully that's only some of my experiences, but so far that's all of them. I'll keep playing to seeing where freelance goes, but for now it is for lack of a better term "aids".

It being in rotation does reduce the problem of spreading players out too much and if the statistics happen to show that it is doing that then they can just rarely put it into the rotation.

Edited by ashesofman: 2/7/2016 12:01:29 AMFreelance should become standard in Crucible. Playing in a fireteam should be a limited time event in the rotation, like the Infernos and Mayhem and whatnot. It could be a new game mode called "Pubstomp"
-
Over thinking it bro. Just play the game and relax
-
Almost every pvp multi-player has had several "no parties allowed" playlists. It won't break anything. Relax.
-
The way I read it, the freelance mode won't be permanent, but added to the cycle of weekly crucible specials alongside mayhem and inferno, so may only be an "issue" for one week or two weeks per month.
-
Well said! But I don't think it will be disastrous. Lots of players are wanting to play without the worries of being stomped by premade teams. This will give them just that. We shall see though.
-
Why don't we just wait and see rather than trying to squash it off the bat? A lot of worried teams out there they won't be able to pubstomp solo players anymore
-
I think it will be fine. The internet part i can see being a problem, but this game is nothing but a spawn kill fest and cap, and as a solo player, im sick of that shit with fireteams exploiting the spawn system and it takes five deaths for the game to finally spawn you somewhere else.
-
You DO know that's its a modifier, right? Like inferno or mayhem. (A special thing for dailies and weeklies)
-
Where did you get that avatar? So kawaii.
-
Freelance mode will be great.

If im playing freelance and i run i to people who are better than me, bravo. I have no room to complain. Except for the boring set ups with TLW and MIDA. Would love to have a game where people learned their are more then 4 guns in the game.

Totally agree. You see this happen to every cod when its near the end of its cycle and not so many people playing.

Nerf Viking Funeral.

You make a lot of assumptions concerning latency and skill gaps in both playlists. If your assumptions are correct then people will not play in the bad playlist. Currently many solo players avoid playing in team focused playlists completely. This may increase the overall player count in crucible and as solo players become more proficient in the roles and objectives in team based games, they may move back to the team playlists with new friends they've made in the freelance playlists. Regardless the direction it goes it's worth a shot to try.
