I can honestly say that I haven't been the one to pick up the ammo first in well over a year. (unless it's to prevent the enemy team from getting it) I'm often the guy that waits and gets killed right before my team gets there. -- what about players that wait for special ammo? those guys/gals are pretty great as well.
