It has 189,819 letters, and takes over 3 hours to pronounce. PNEUMONOULTRAMICROSCOPICSILICOVOLCANOCONIOSIS (also spelled PNEUMONOULTRAMICROSCOPICSILICOVOLCANOKONIOSIS) = a lung disease caused by breathing in particles of siliceous volcanic dust. This is the longest word in any English dictionary. Twyndyllyngs is the longest word in English that doesn't contain one of the five vowels. (AEIOU). It comes from Welsh and is obviously rare, but it does appear in the Oxford English Dictionary. The longest word in dictionaries having only one vowel is STRENGTHS. The longest word with only one vowels (if repeats are allowed) is CHRONONHOTONTHOLOGOS (twenty letters). STRENGTHLESSNESSES contains only Es and is just two letters shorter. The longest words with only 1 syllable are screeched (nine letters). But there are also schlepped, scratched, scrounged, scrunched, stretched, and the plural nouns straights and strengths (all with nine letters). The 20-volume historical Oxford English Dictionary also has scraughed, scrinched, scritched, scrooched, sprainged, spreathed, throughed, and thrutched. It includes, too, a single instance of the ten-letter word scraunched, from the 1620 English translation of Don Quixote, a novel by the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes. The longest word I think personally is a blast to say is, supercalifragalisticexpialidocious. (oh and I use tetrahydrocannibinol a lot too) Fun vocabulary facts, yay! :D
