Have you ever experienced it?
Just this morning, I eagerly downloaded The Witness, Jonathan Blow's follow-up to 2008 indie hit Braid. But within maybe an hour of playing, I was feeling incredibly ill. The game's lack of music (so far) didn't help, but primarily it was something to do with the visual presentation.
I've been looking into it a bit, and it can apparently be affected by things such as distance from the display and FOV... My distance is perfectly fine, according to several sources, but I've no idea if the FOV is limited.
One more thing I suspect it might be is the lack of 'player appendage' onscreen. It's usually a gun, and I guess it usually helps me somehow. Another game that lacked such an object was PS Plus puzzle-adventure Ether One. It's exactly the same kind of game: first-person, extremely limited HUD to the point where it's absent most of the time, silky smooth but sluggish by default movement.
So yeah. I wonder if there's any way for me to offset the nausea or anything. Apparently Mirror's Edge had a reticle for just that purpose. And I've heard that chewing ginger can help.
Any advice? Any stories? I also tend to get it with a lot of first-person PC games.
Edit: Blow is aware of it and working on a solution. Thank gods.

Never happened to me..

The worst for me was the very first medal of honor on the original PlayStation. I don't know what it was but I could never even finish the first label on that one, which is odd because I don't have issues with other fps titles. Also, last summer after a pretty long gaming session I got that feeling driving the batmobile in arkham knight. And occasionally, very rarely in fact, it happens in other games but that's usually due to dehydration I think because if I stop, get a drink, give myself ten minutes, then I can go back and play the same game for hours more.

Marathon did this to me too. The only thing that worked for me was to just play in shorter increments, which is a crappy solution.

Edited by Martiis: 1/27/2016 3:14:09 AMAdjust the FOV and disable motion blur.

Were you hungover?
-
The only time I remember experiencing it was while I was a few beers deep and decided to do barrel rolls with my ship in Elite:Dangerous. Watching the stars spinning in circles made me feel weird.
-
Only when I've flown Jets or Airplanes.
-
This is weird, I was watching a let's play nukemdukem was doing of the witness earlier today and about half an hour in I experienced motion sickness too. Maybe it's just that game because I'm fine with everything else.

Ginger will settle your stomach. Wwe15 did this to me, it's a mind trick, your eyes tell your brain your moving, and your body tells it your not, instant motion sickness. Try dramamin(?) Motion sick pills.

Want to feel sick? Download The Devils Tuning Fork. Great free indie game made as a college project. Honestly I give it a solid 8/10

I get that with some games, will need to take a break after every half hour of playing. Make sure you play in a bright room, have good posture and drink plenty of water.

This only happened to me once in killzone shadow fall on one of the levels where there was no even ground anywhere and everything was all slanted coupled with piles of rubble everywhere. Wasn't really motion sickness but a kind of vertigo I guess.

There's 2 games I mainly play right now, and 1 of them....it doesn't cause motion sickness but...idk...I guess I sometimes have a hard to like...following the camera movement or ...like....feel dizzy if I move it around to much. The 2 games are halo 5, and bloodborne. Oddly enough, it's bloodborne that causes this to happen. There's a few parts of the game where the framerate drops hella low as well and turning the camera while also trying to get to a spot while everything is going on plus the frame rate drop, I get even more out if the loop. Maybe halo 5s 60fps has made me so used to that, that when I play stuff on lower framerate I get a disoriented feeling. I don't ever feel sick though.
-
It's 60fps, so I can see why that might happen.
-
I've felt it before, but only under 2 circumstances. Either A: motion blur is turned on (a terrible feature in games) Or b: FoV is too high or too low. Between 50-70 is all I can handle without it hurting my head).
-
Fallout 4 with standard FoV in tight spaces makes me sick lmao. Only happens in one or two areas though..
-
Damn that sucks. I used to get headaches playing borderlands.

Edited by Smarkdow: 1/26/2016 8:20:05 PMI used to experience it with Halo 3, actually. The combination of the tunnel-vision FOV (which was way worse on standard definition, 4:3 TVs) and 30FPS made me sick, especially after playing a game like Call of Duty 4. I think increasing the FOV (if the game allows it) can alleviate it.

"Prey" really -blam!-ed with me. The whole anti-gravity thing where you walk on the roof or walls but it was the screen turning upside down and then right side up over and over again that really did it.

Edited by Crypto -PS4-: 1/26/2016 5:28:58 PMCorridor shooters did it for me years ago with games like doom & alien Vs predator.

The only game I have ever suffered this with was Marathon: Durandal. I just didn't play it again.

Edited by Vardnax: 1/26/2016 4:32:44 PMMost games I play don't cause motion sickness in me. Only some games, like Minecraft, Borderlands, first person GTA V. In bad cases I can't play for hours because I'm feeling too sick and a bit dizzy, feels like having a flu or something. I think Borderlands was the worst for me. The graphics -blam!- up my brain. Bigger distance to TV doesn't change much when I play those games. Since I know some games cause motion sickness in me, I'm worried VR glasses will do it too. And I'd really like to play VR.

I have heard from people that experience similar problems that changing the FOV does indeed help. However, I've never had a problem with it. Wish I had more information to help you. There have been some games in the past that originally had their FOV locked, but people having motion sickness problems resulted in mods/developer response. Might want to look up mods.
