World of warcraft has been using dedicated servers for a decade and a half, but they also charge 8 million ppl between 10 and 15 dollars each month to pay employees to monitor, maintain and update those servers that can support several thousand players at one time. You wanna pay 15 dollars a mont to play destiny?
-
All joking aside Destiny does not need dedicated servers. P2P can work just fine when it's done properly. Warframe for example has ACTIVE connection managed P2P, meaning when you join a matchmade group or when your pre made group starts an activity the clever coding DE put in place rearranges the group into the most efficient use of bandwidth it can. I have almost never had lag issues with it. Sure there are occasionally issues where the group is rearranged due to a member leaving partway through an activity but it is 100% better than the mess Bungie makes.
-
Think he would accept payment in £sterling? Would make it cheaper still.
-
You realize they need multiple servers In different areas right? Maybe one in new York one in Cali etc. Also servers that would hold that many people on it would cost way more and would probably have monthly payments involved to keep the servers up.
-
I love how people think that Bungie would only need a couple of thousand of these types of systems in order to run dedicated servers. First you need the hardware, now let me give you a example my pc clan runs our own Battlefield 4 servers and that is a cost each year of around £500 to £1000 and that is for one server box. From that cost, the hosting company has to provide the hardware, rack space, internet, backup internet, electric, backup power, air con, software licenses, maintenance staff and staff to deal with updating the master server with game updates that can then be installed on the smaller server boxes. It's not just a case of buying pc server hardware and there you go, you need a lot more and before people start posting stuff how about doing a little research before you post and make yourselves sound like little kids.
-
For that price it will have a dial up level data speed and bandwidth and will probably struggle if more than two people connect to it! Look at just the connection rates for dedicated high speed lines, you can easily be looking at $1000000 a year for the line, $5-10'000000 for the build cost of running the lines to your server farm and that's just to connect them to the backbone. You then have to buy them/rent them, build the secure highly cooled location for them, service them!
-
They would still NEEED thousands of this across the nation so that not every1 connects to the same place

The obsession with the tacos makes me think that you are related to crazy Dave

Literally best thing I've read all week.
-
I got a solution. Here are my dedicated servurs. They can hold 0.04% ppl.

Problem solved. Use their Ps4s to make a server.

Lol @ "mo money, mo tacos"
-
You can actually use an Xbox one to host 50+ players on your own personal dedicated server on ark: survival evolved, so there's that too.
-
Dear Bungie, If you cannot afford dedicated servers, you should know that I would gladly settle for dedicated tacos.

Edited by The Fallen Zyzz: 1/22/2016 2:54:34 PMTo be quite fair, a server for Destiny would cost a bit more than $45. But, then again, that wasn't too much for DICE and EA. IIRC each Battlefield 4 dedicated server actually runs four virtual servers on it at the same time. That is potentially 256 players duking it out with vehicles and Levolution events. I'm sure Bungie could run far more than 4 measly virtual servers on their dedicated hardware.
What makes this sting especially is that we don't have dedicated servers despite the content/dollar price gouging and the microtransactions. Activision is one of the biggest players in the market. They could easily foot the cost for dedicated servers for Blops 3 and Destiny. The bottom line can take the tiny hit.
"The server should be at least... Three times this size." Possible Zoolander reference?
