This post is pure speculation
This is what Halo 5's well made but false advertising campaign led me to believe the story of Halo 5 would be like. Let me know if you think this speculation is cool, because honestly, I think this is the plot that 343 had in development before something happened along the way in production, and we got the final, rather lackluster product.
This is the story the trailers lead me to believe Halo 5 would've had. It's speculation, but I believe the script of Halo 5 looked something like this at some point in development.
The plot begins with a Guardian appearing out of no where on some planet. The UNSC sends the Master Chief and Blue Team to investigate. When they arrive, Cortana somehow gets in contact with the Master Chief/Blue Team and briefly speaks with them, saying she needs their help or she's in trouble or something. She basically just gives them something like coordinates, and the Master Chief abandons the UNSC in an attempt to track down Cortana. Every time he reaches a destination, Cortana briefly contacts him again and another Guardian appears.
The UNSC has no idea where the Master Chief went until they start spotting him among the camera footage of the civilian cities being destroyed by the Guardians. They send Locke to track John down, and Locke finds him among the rubble of one of these cities. They have a brief stand off, but the Master Chief gets away through some deus ex machina. Locke briefly loses track of Master Chief and contacts the Arbiter for help. The Arbiter doesn't know much about John's location.
The Didact returns and reveals to the UNSC his plans involving the Guardians. Locke uses this information to find out where the Master Chief will be headed next, but his plan backfires and he's injured by the sudden appearance of a Guardian. Master Chief finds him, and the two have a battle. Eventually they decide that they're on the same side, and they agree that finding Cortana could be their best bet to stopping the Didact.
Cortana reveals a final location, and it's a hidden Halo ring, one that apparently was not destroyed. I don't know if the story ends here or not, because the trailers give me nothing more to go on. I'm aware there are plot holes with my little speculation, but it's the best I could think of given the trailers.
The current plot holes include:
- Why was Cortana leading the Chief around (there's probably a reason for this that I'm not smart enough to think of)
- Blue Team and Osiris Team are sort of forgotten about, as the trailers seem to focus on Locke and Chief
-
This would've made a better story.

It's like Batman vs Superman but the fight only lasts 5 minutes instead of 30

Edited by Tu Chocolate Caliente: 1/20/2016 5:34:34 PMThe marketing campaign for H5 was a false advertisement teasing you a cool story that didn't exist in the game at all.

Good post m80

I feel like H5 tried to pull a Star Wars V, but instead of making a satisfying story with a good cliffhanger, it just focuses entirely on the latter, and doesn't even filly succeed.

PLOT TWIST!
It's actually the trailers for Halo 6. The Didact is returning...
I feel like what we saw in the Halo 5 campaign was them fulfilling the Chief vs Locke thing, although it was very lackluster. As for the guardian in the sand and whatnot, I think that'll be Halo 6. I believe the Didact will make a return in some form or another in Halo 6.

A lot of people are saying the Guardian in the sand trailer from e3 is actually in reference to halo 6 because of chief's cracked visor.
-
The marketing team seems to be better writers than the people who actually wrote the game. I have the same fear for Deadpool. If the marketing guys understand your IP better than your writers, you have a problem.

There is no speculation about the trailers being misleading. And that's where our conspiracy theories pick up lol.
