Somehow related to their environment (radiation or something), which is similar to why human populations in sunny areas have darker skin (protection from solar radiation). If there is more to it than skin color, the game hasn't made that apparent. The queen has magical powers, but so does Eris, so that is more likely due to her knowledge than her race.
