Remember that time when you used the eye of Zydron, the Gatelord to open the portal to the Black Garden and fought the three Vex minds controlled by The Black Heart? Did you feel a big sense of accomplishment and understanding about the feat you just preformed? No? Sorta? Well, I have come to the conclusion that your mission had a much greater impact than you may have ever considered.
The origins of the Vault of Glass and the Heart of the Black Garden
The inspiration for the Vault of Glass came from the data sent by Quaria, Blade Transform about the power of Oryx's Throne World.
There will be points in space and time where this data is vital. There will be great projects undertaken in the study of this ontological power, this throne-space. -Verse 5.1- End of failed timeline
Along with this data, Quaria also sends a captured worm larvae. This larvae grows, and eventually becomes what we know as the Heart of the Black Garden. The data Quaria sends also becomes the basis for the Vault of Glass, where the Vex attempt to recreate the power of Oryx's Throne world, a testing ground for the Vex's ontological power to change the laws of the universe.
"I sense a pattern here- a connection from this Vex outbreak, The Black Garden, and the Vault of Glass." - Ikora Rey
In the Rising Tide Mars story mission, you travel through the abandoned Mars subway system. There, you fight waves of Vex arriving here via Vex gates and destroy the Prohibitive Mind, the controlling Mind if the Virgo Prohibition. We know that the purpose of this Vex incursion was caused by these Vex being called home. The mysterious Exo Stranger tells us that the home for all Vex is the Black Garden.
Now, let's delve into the Black Garden ourselves and try to see why this Vex programming had such a dramatic change in behavior.
The Sol Progeny and the Vault of Glass
The Black Heart of the Garden had three powerful Vex minds awaiting activation. These three Vex minds were known as the Sol Progeny: The Primeval Mind, the Imminent Mind, and the Eschaton Mind. We know the the Black Heart had a plan for these three Vex units, but we attacked the garden before it was strong enough to activate all three at once. Because of us, The Heart could only activate them one at a time as a defense mechanism. Because we did this, we pretty much saved the universe.
But what are the Sol Progeny? Are they just big Vex activated by the Black Heart or is there more to them? Well, the dictionary definition of Progeny is: "The immediate descendants of a person." In Destiny terms, these three minds are the vessels for the Black Heart itself.
Did you ever notice that the Sol Progeny resembled the Vex found in the Vault of Glass? There is a reason for that. Primeval means "having existed in the earliest stage or state." The Primeval Mind bears a striking resemblance to the Precursor Vex in the Vault of Glass (Also known as the Sol Primeval, sound familiar?), solidifying that they are likely the earliest form of the Vex we've ever encountered.
Likewise, the Imminent Mind bears resemblance to the Sol Imminent (or the Descendants) in the Vault of Glass. The definition of imminent is: "Close in time, or about to occur."
Lastly, we have the Eschaton Mind. The dictionary definition of eschaton is actually a Bible term meaning: "The day at the end of time, following Armageddon where God will decree the fates of all individual humans." For Destiny purposes, this means: The completion of the Vex's big plans.
Now that we understand more about the Sol Progeny, we can delve into the purpose of these minds.
Finale and Conclusion
"But the power of the Vex is not broken. Look into the Vault, Guardian, for it is said to hold powers the Progeny was meant to bring forth." -The Speaker
I believe that should the Black Heart have succeeded, it would have activated the three Progeny at once, the Virgo Prohibition would have taken them to the Vault of Glass and opened the door (it's no mistake that the Praetorians guarding the door are of the Virgo Prohibition) and the Progeny would have brought out all of the ontological powers of the Vault of Glass into reality and, thus, taken over the universe itself.
Atheon is the Vex's Time Conflux meaning that he is the meeting place of past, present, and future, as evidenced by the presence of the Hezen Protective, Sol Primeval, and Sol Imminent all in the same place at the same time (The Glass Throne, also known as Atheon's room or the Gatekeeper room). So, not only would the Vex have wove themselves into the fabric of reality, they would have done it in the present, future, and the past. There would be no way to undo this, because as far as the universe would be concerned, it has always been that way.
TL;DR:
If you hadn't stopped the Sol Progeny in the Black Garden mission, the Vex would have taken over all of reality.
The lore for this game is so immense, it's just sad it's not in the game.
