DESTINY: Chapter I, A Guardian Rises: Part I, The Breach
From a deep sleep you begin to stir. You hear off in the far distance a whirring noise of some sort and a faint blue light. Everything goes dark and quiet again as it stops momentarily as you hear from beyond a faint distant echo a voice pulling you from your slumber.
VOICE: Is it possible?
You hear the whirring sound return as you see more clearly now a blue light emitting from a source. Your thoughts of curiosity start coming to you as you realize that the light is the source of the voice.
VOICE: There you are.
You blink heavily as you are trying to adjust your eyes trying to simply focus as you push through the pain in your retinas. You rub them trying to alleviate the pain and you quickly discover that your arms are stiff and sore as intense pain shoots through them sending pain spikes throughout your body. You wince in pain as you sit up. You hear the voice again you pause as you see where it is coming from. You are confused as to what you are looking at, you see a floating mechanical droid of some sort. It zips around in the air as if it were weightless passing in front of the sun. Blinded by the rays you look down and see yourself. You appear dressed in tattered rags and worn beyond salvageable gear. You lift your hands and grip then together as the stiffness is beginning to wane. You take a deep breath through your nose. As you let in the cool, crisp air, the smell thick of metal envelopes your senses. You close your eyes to try to gain some sort of awareness of the situation, a thought a memory something. Nothing comes to mind it's all blank. Amnesia perhaps?
DROID: Guardian. Guardian? Eyes up, Guardian!
You look at the droid again in confusion. You don't understand why it sounds so, excited. As if an emotion were possible in a machine.
DROID: It worked. You're alive! You don't know how long I've been looking for you. I'm a Ghost. Actually, now I'm your Ghost. And you... well, you've been dead a long time. So you're going to see a lot of things you won't understand.
GUARDIAN: Like you?
You barely manage to grunt that out as your throat feels like sandpaper and your voice is raspy and harsh. You see this... ghost whatever that is, floating in a single place spinning the back half of its shell as if it were thinking.
GHOST: Yes, many things like myself.
You try to stand up but feel weak and weary, you get the spins as you catch you self against a car crushing the weakened hood lost in the years to rust. You look around and find yourself surrounded by rusted cars on a broken overpass. You see the drop-off of the cliffs and try to make out the structures in the far distance. You turn back to find yourself facing a large wall. Between you and it is the Ghost. You touch your forehead, closing your eyes, shaking your head trying to lose the fatigue.
GHOST: Easy Guardian you have been in wandering in the Darkness for a long, long time.
GUARDIAN: How long have I been gone?
GHOST: Hard to say, I was created shortly after The Collapse and I have been looking for you since. You could have succumbed to darkness moments before my creation or centuries before.
GUARDIAN: So in other words you don't know.
You see the Ghost tilt to one side as if it didn't know what to say. So you quickly change the subject.
GUARDIAN: You mentioned a Collapse. A Collapse of what?
You see the Ghost pick back up and widen it's central iris. You knew that it had an answer for this one as it began to speak in a wondrous tone.
GHOST: The Golden Age. An era of humanity of peace, prosperity, technology, exploration, civilization, and wonder all blessed by The Traveler's Light.
GUARDIAN: Who is the Traveler?
You see the ghost pause and back away slightly without spinning as if it were surprised, shocked even. It regains its composure as it begins to speak and spin again a voice hesitant with bewilderment.
GHOST: Wow, I wasn't expecting that for a question. You have been gone far longer than I had thought. Anyway your question. The Traveler isn't a who but a what.
You shoot the Ghost a stern look, as a queue to continue on. While you are rolling your shoulders working out the kinks in your muscles.
GHOST: Well The Traveler is where we are needing to go, it is over the last city on Earth. We need to get there and all will be explained once we do.
You begin to open your mouth to say something but before words can flow you hear a series of shrieks in the background. The Ghost turns to look and then turns back to you.
GHOST: This is Fallen territory. We aren't safe here. I have to get you to The City. Hold still.
GUARDIAN: Fallen?
The Ghost disappears in a wisp of light but you still hear it's voice.
GHOST: Don't worry, I'm still with you. Raise your dominant hand, palm up, and I will rematerialize but for now we need to move. Fast. The Fallen are minions of the darkness. Enemies of light, the Traveler, Humanity, and YOU. They will not hesitate to kill you were you stand, now go!
You try to run but your legs feel like cinderblocks. You stagger like a child, it almost feels like you are relearning how to walk, let alone run. You gain your footing and begin to tread faster as you your pace goes into a jog. You proceed through the junkyard of rusted cars as you find any gap between them to navigate through. You keep hearing the cries of these, Fallen in the distance. You don't even know what they are or what they look like but you can't help but feel the hair stand up on the back of your neck. You can't shake the feeling like you are being watched, no, more like... hunted. This fear of this unknown threat breaks your pace into a sprint. You reach the wall but don't see a way inside. You look around in panic and hear the Ghost chime up.
GHOST: We won't survive long out in the open like this. Let's get inside, over there, up the stairs. Looks like a doorway into The Breach.
You run up the stairs and proceed inside...
