Note: Contains Star Wars: The Force Awakens spoilers
The New Star Wars contains many things that raise question and conversation, one of the biggest being the identity of the mysterious Supreme Leader Snoke. It had been speculated to be Darth Plageus, and while this theory is supported, some things bring it down a little. The more likely possibility is that they created a new character, the Snoke we have seen in the movie, and we just don't know much about him yet, Unless we do. Here is why I think Snoke is, and we have already seen a major part of his backstory and motivation.
The Grand Inquisitor.(The double bladed light saber guy from Rebels)
1. First let's look at Snokes appearance. He has a pale white skin with a sunken and damaged face. In the Star Wars Rebels cartoon, the inquisitor is defeated by the Jedi Kanan at the end of. A huge light saber battle, and falls off into an explosion. Being strong with the dark side, he might have survived, giving us an explanation for the damaged face. Also the inquisitor is a Pau'an(the people in the third movie where General Griveous is) They have gray faces lightly striped faves the resembles a human for he lost part. JJ has said that Snoke stands around about 7ft, roughly the same height as the grand inquisitor.
2. The timing of this works well. When the inquisitor "died" he was middle aged roughly, not too old at that point. He could have easily survived and plotted on his own until a oppurtune time arose when the emperor and Darth Vader, the only two Dark side users with power and authority, were out of the way. He then had a chance to move in and guide the remnants of the empire.
3. Next we look at the relations between Snoke and Hux. Hux Obviosly obeys and goes by the commands given by Snoke, and seems to respect him. I believe his is because Hux's father, Brendol Hux, trained troops at the Arkanjs Academy, the same place where they Grand Inquisitor trained force sensitive children. These two high ranking individuals most likely knew each other, giving Hux some familiarity with Snoke
3. Darth Vader is dead, but is reputation isn't. Kylo Ren is most Obviosly obsessed with him, which leads to the idea the Unknown Knights of Ren could be followers or a "cult" of sorts to Darth Vader. Snoke is affiliated with the Knights even though he doesn't lead them, and my have helped kindled Kylo's admiration for Vader. The Grand Inquisitor was trained by Vader himself, and may have had a great respect for him. His job was to wipe out and hunt remaining Jedi, and it is most likely still one of his goals, as he is trying to find Luke Skywalker in the movie alongside he First Order. He still has a dedication to finishing what Vader told him to do. Also, The Inquisitor willingly jumped into the explosion that he "died" in so wouldn't be in trouble when he came back to Vader. This showed he was ashamed to fail Vader, and hinted that his opinion of Vader was so high he couldn't live with himself failing Vader. Now that Vader is gone, the inquisitor/Snoke must continue his legacy, and wipe out all Jedi.
4. This last point is merely speculation and not as solid as the others. In the Star Wars Force Awakens concept art book, the main villain concept were nicknamed and called "The Jedi Killer" for a long while until they created Kylo Ren. The inquisitor was a "Jedi killer" tasked with hunting and killing remaining Jedi. The Jedi killer idea was never approved so we got Kylo Ren and didn't see it in the movie. There is a chance everyone wanted to use the idea somewhere so they used that idea to create the Inquisitor in rebels which was to become the backstory and motive for the Snoke character pulling the strings in the next movie. It could have been the reason we never hear the Inquisitors name. He is just who Snoke was in his early days.
TLRD:
Snoke is the Grand Inquisitor from the animated Star Wars Rebels. There are many physical similarities plus the inquisitor was injured In an explosion. Hux knows Snoke since the Inquisitor and Hux's Father worked at the same Academy in Empire times. Snoke/Inquisitor has been recovering from injuries and plotting until he got a chance for power when the Empire fell. Early concept art of Star Wars suggest that they were interested in a Jedi killer villain that didn't make the movie. The Inquisitor is a Jedi Hunter/Killer trained and partially influenced by Darth Vader and his inspiration may have come from potential villains of the new movie, and not wanting to throw the concept away, they created the inquisitor which is a backstory and motivation for Snoke, thus the reason the Inquisitor had no formal name mentioned. It is also possible he inquisitor is trying to finish his mission given by Vader to kill all surviving Jedi explaining why he his trying to find Luke and may have kindled Kylo's admiration for Vader
