The nine are the cast aways. Like Osiris and maybe kabar and others who survived and are yet to be named.

I don't know about Osiris. Anonpig made a theory around a fifth race that includes Osiris and him possibly wielding the power of the true darkness's most powerful weapon. Some kind of eye with a very Egyptian theme around it. Eye of Osiris. But I suppose it may still be possible.
