  • Hip-hop/rap. For those who generalize rap by mainstream lyrics, understand that you don't party to songs with a heavy lyrical presence. Pop music has always been focused around catchy, memorable hooks, and similar sound structures. To judge an entire genre from it's pop-presence is simply silly, due to this. ^Here is some high quality rap. You see it's not nearly as popular, though Aesop Rock is noted by many as a very skilled lyricist, specifically because lyrically focused music usually takes a more attentive listen to appreciate in full. You aren't going to go to a party and sit around a speaker breaking down all the metaphors Aesop uses. For a clearer example for someone who doesn't listen to rap, imagine a DJ trying to get a dance floor filled with people dancing while playing Pink Floyd. It doesn't work. Pink Floyd makes music that requires a more attentive listen to appreciate.
