How exactly does the srl thing actually work? You just equip it and just race?

Yes. You get 3-4% per race. Just don't explode during or after the race.

It's consistently 3.5% when finishing a race, placement doesn't seem to matter. Even if you die twice in a race, you'll get that progress back after completing the laps. If you're really worried, you can also leave it unequipped during the race, and just equip it as soon as you cross the finish line, and you'll get the progress.
