I think you made a really good point on what made Halo great and what holds Destiny from reaching that same potential.
The thing about Halo is that we didn't have to play every single game type Bungie's way, we had control of how we wanted to play the game.
With Destiny, we ONLY HAVE what Bungie gives us, and part of the way that they manage their game is that they take away and restrict material on a weekly basis. When they are our only source of content, and they actively take away and restrict more content than they give, it hurts our experience.
I think that, even as of The Taken King, we may have even less options than we had at the launch of Halo 3 (which easily had more matchmaking playlists, let alone Forge and Custom Games).
Considering that Destiny is marketed as a moving, changing world, it's ridiculously rigid in the ways you can change it.
