That happens when I use a sword except the other way around. If I get a sword hit on somebody the same moment I die, it doesn't register the kill and the game just says they are down yet they get the kill on me. Maybe the same scenario with you, maybe you guys both headshot each other, your headshot was a frame earlier so you got the kill but he also fired in that frame or perhaps the very next frame and still got you down
