Good afternoon #Gaming. It's Doc here with a quick message about the popular space simulator Elite: Dangerous.
There seems to be a lot of hype going around for the new upcoming game No Man's Sky. The hype is founded I feel mostly due to its massive scale. Truly, we have not seen something so large and magnificent before. This game will be fun to explore in and find just the unique quirks that make this unique game awesome. It's coming out for the PC and PS4 sometime next year (knock on wood) and I hope it has an amazing release.
On the other hand, there is a game that is already out and existing on the PC, Mac, Xbox One and soon, the PS4. That would be Elite: Dangerous. I'm gonna tell you a little about the game while comparing it to its apparent competitor.
Unlike NMS, Elite: Dangerous (ED) is a space simulator that you experience from the cockpit of your chosen vehicle. Within ED you will find a myriad of different planets, stars, ingame factions, and even player born factions.
What this means is that ED offers a rich experience to the player that encompasses not just where you play, but how you play. Your actions, and the actions of many others, can have lasting repercussions on the game world itself and will be identifiable ingame. If you want to kick a group out of a particular star system, you can. If you want them to expand, you can make that happen. You can participate in civil wars and public events/community goals for monetary gain, faction rep, and special prizes. One of the largest factors in me getting this game was the opportunity to make/find new friends to play this multiplayer game with. You can and will find real people with their own goals of survival or making it rich in this game.
Elite: Dangerous offers to the player a 1:1 scale of our own Milky Way galaxy with recognizable stars, constellations, and applicable real world physics; it is a simulator after all. NMS will offer the players a large scale galaxy/play area to explore with procedurally generated worlds, flora and fauna. This large area is impressive and grand but your chances of meaningful interaction (at the moment) seem low and extremely rare.
Elite: Dangerous is a part of game developer Frontier's 30 year ongoing game franchise and is the latest installment within that huge legacy. The company treats its players like family and frequently interacts with its player base and keeps them abreast to upcoming changes and possible ideas for the game. I know through interaction that their CM is friendly and responsive and is a great face that reflects well on a great company. Frontier is always developing this game. Their next expansion comes out soon for PC and Mac and in early 2016 for Xbox.
Feel free to ask me any questions below in the comments
or you can call me names, I don't care
If you are interested, there is a group that has formed here on b.net with similarly minded individuals dedicated to Elite: Dangerous. We don't want anyone to have to go out into the black alone so if you feel like joining or just finding out what we're about, search for ED Archive. We accept all skill levels, noob and vet, and have all levels of dedication within our ranks.
Have a great day everyone.

I mean just look how gorgeous this game can be, this is where I parked up for the night. This isnt even one of the truly breathtaking sights this game can offer up. Calm , zen-like sightseeing, or furious action (combat zones = all out space battle), ED does both ends of the spectrum well.

I thought about getting into this game a while back but never did. What's the bounty hunter portion of the game like?
-
Between this, NMS, Everspace, and Star Citizen, I don't even know what I'm going to do. Space sim heaven.
-
The graphics look more realistic than those of NMS, seems like.
-
Yes!! More people need to know about this game! I keep seeing people in these forums that are hyped for NMS, but don't even know what elite dangerous is.
-
I've had this game for awhile on xbone and have yet to launch it, this post makes me want to jump on now and play and think I will once the wife is done with the tv.

Edited by TotallyNotDrew: 12/12/2015 3:40:21 AMEach game offers something different. They aren't competitors as much as they're different takes on the genre. No Man's Sky take the creative route, bursting with color and planets so near it should be impossible. Fantastical creatures all unique and different in some way. While Elite Dangerous prefers the more realistic, grim, and gritty route. Cutthroat factions each trying to get the upper hand in a hyper realistic galaxy of correct orbits and careful flight maneuvers. No Man's Sky is so much simpler, and that's what makes it so beautiful. Don't try to discredit or convince people that one is better then the other, when they each have so much to offer. Edit: Sorry, thought you were trashing NMS for no reason. Ignore this post then :/ still stands though for others.

So it hasn't been released on the Xbox One yet?
-
Sounds like a cool game.

Bonjour from the mobile app; mind giving me a link to the group?

Elite Dangerous Is way more complicated than No Man's Sky will be, just saying.

How can I make money?

Edited by ArbitraryOak892: 12/12/2015 1:08:01 AMI think they both are some of the best games on the market(or will be soon) but personally I like no mans sky better because I always loved sandbox discovery. I love exploring, and space has always fascinated me. On the other though ED is more realistic and has more combat. They're both good games though. I wouldn't say one is better than the other

Just don't let goonswarm or N3 know.

Biggest question I have: Can I easily play with friends?

Edited by thefourfoldroot: 12/11/2015 8:16:45 PMNice post. I'm intrigued by Elite, but am put off a little by the social aspect. Not sure how much a lone wolf like me will be at a disadvantage. Also, do you know how the game compares to EVE: Valkyrie that is out shortly? I'll have the choice of the 3 and am leaning towards EVE at the moment as it is confirmed as being on PlayStation VR.
