I played several games of SRL, and have made a list of problems that plague the event and its mechanics:
You can get off your sparrow by accident. Who. The heck. Decided leaving that feature in was a good idea. Racing is hard enough, without having to worry about accidentally mashing a button to dismount mid-race and instantly dying/exploding or whatever.
Sparrow controls cannot decide between being overly sensitive, or completely unresponsive. Attempting to turn, bank, or maintain a consistent boost is virtually impossible, due to the inherent instability of the vehicles prior to the event. At times I will be either completely unable to turn and miss gates, or I will turn far more aggressively than should be possible and wind up turned completely around from my original heading. Both of these instances require heavy use of the lateral boosts simply to remain on-course around smaller turns and bends.
Sparrow brake is too aggressive/Turning aggressively does not exist. Agility based sparrows have a severe problem with their breaking. Out of every match I have been in, holding the brake for longer than about a half a second results in my speed dropping below 30Km/Hr, and I am completely unable to regain my speed without a gate. The 'Aggressive Turning' feature is also non-existent, and largely just words for show. With the air brake reducing speed nearly completely(and at times completely to 0), as well as robbing the use of the boosting engines it makes it impossible to turn properly around sharp corners using the ability. At best I find myself able to perform a brake-slide by pulsing the break, beginning quite a way back from the actual turn, and only on the first turn of rapid bends. I have had more luck using the increased speed from the Timebreaker to 'power slide' around turns than with any other sparrow, but that is the only thing useful as the Timebreaker cannot compete speed-wise.
Sparrow boost will randomly stop working. This is not just a problem I experienced. In three consecutive races, I witnessed all six drivers experience a total failure of their boost, resulting in all of us being capable of only coasting around a corner to the next gate, honking at one another repeatedly to try to make light of this absolutely ridiculous problem.
Gates cause an immediate reduction in speed when missed. Seriously, beat whoever came up with this idea. It makes absolutely no sense for missing a gate to rob you of your speed. No other racing element in any video game I have ever played has had such a mechanic, and you are almost literally punishing players for not being able to properly drive your vehicles.
Missing 3+ gates consecutively removes sparrow boost. See above statement. No point to this mechanic, especially when other players have the ability to knock you away from gates.
Gate boost does not have a reliable and predictable direction for effect. Out of every gate I have successfully cleared, in the probably 10 to 15 races I've completed, not once have I seen a predictable direction to expect the gates to apply my boost in. Everything I have tried, from banking into them and boosting, to directing as much of my momentum in the direction I want to go, has produced random results. I've gotten better mechanics from features like this from games on the Playstation One and the Nintendo Game Cube, than from the SRL. If it weren't for the fact that missing too many gates makes it impossible to move, I would choose to abstain from crossing them altogether and see if I could compete that way.
And that's just some of the problems I encountered. From not being able to move, to randomly being ejected from my sparrow or being launched by an invisible ramp off of the track, to gates near important gaps and jumps not registering the boost at all, there's probably a load of problems I could go into, but I picked and chose the ones I saw as the most difficult, and experience-ruining. Despite being pretty decent with most racing games, I'll be staying well clear of the SRL, and I won't be giving Tess any of my better-spent dollars to buy any of the new sparrows. Destiny has been feeling stale for quite a while now, and this certainly didn't make anything feel 'new' or 'refreshed'.
